Ok Ive been looking for 3 months now and so far I had one fail the vetting, bought one from the sales that had to go back. One was a headshaker.
Seen others that were lame, loopy or just not as it said on the tin. Latest one had long slopping pasterns that would be lucky to hold up as a companion.

So still looking for sane, sound 15.3-16.2h 4 to 11yrs light to mw forward going but safe, light in the hand, for mature lady to do riding club inc SJ

How you all doing?

Don't want to be controversial but is £2800 enough for a decent horse who fulfils all your criteria? What does everyone think?

no its isn't. I did have £3500 but has gone due to wasted vettings and stuff I paid out on the horse that went back! Even then it wasn't enough but its all I have

If the horse is safe and meets your other criteria, maybe you could just plan to lighten the horse when you get it? Mine leant on a Waterford when he arrived, but I've just sorted that out myself. I think that your budget may be a tiny bit tight, but you may well find something at that price coming into winter. Unless you look at unpopular breeds, like the Arab, who do go a bit cheaper. (Like mine!).

I think you can find one! You just may have to put some work into it. My late horse (in my sig) cost £2,600 as a 5 yr old she was pretty raw and quite flighty to handle, terrible to shoe but absolutly genuine, talented, always safe (although could be sharp!) and very light in the hand.
Im sure you'll find one it just wont be the finished article. There seems to be lots of ex racehorses around.. my mum got an ex chaser for £1,800 again needed a lot of schooling ect but really lovely temp, sane and stunning to look at! Shes over the moon with him!
Dont get despondent, right horse will come along!

You will find one somewhere, however it will probably be a "diamond in the rough" type!
I have one that nearly fits everything you want, but as she is only 4 I wouldn't class her as 100% safe because any youngster can be unpredicatable (although has never done anything naughty with me!).

I have what you want but sadly she's about a grand over your budget

Ok so maybe because of all the rubbish I have seen I may come across as wanting the impossible for my funds, so I will elaborate
Because of my broken ankle and Rheumatoid arthritis

All I want to avoid are

horses that take a strong hold or lean too much,

Fizzy/spooky over exciteable types

something that takes too much leg to get going or keep it there

something known to buck/rear/bolt/nap badly (a little nappy is fine)

Green/young horses are fine so long as generally thought to be safe(that is by our standards on HH not normal sellers standards)!!

Oh yeah and may seem like colour prejudice but because of my RA I can't cope with cleaning greys or coloureds. Cobby types are out too, as too wide for my duff hips

HA BLIMEY I hear you all say SHOULD YOU EVEN BE RIDING? lol yeah actually it helps me a lot!!

I think you'll find it tough to find something suitable within your budget. As people have said though - you need to look for the "diamond in the rough" types. If I were you I wouldn't go by looks at all, I've bought numerous "projects" who were literally bought off the hill-side, either obese or wormy as hell with v long manes and tails etc. but with a bit of trimming etc. and some work they all turn out really really well.

Thing is though, that generally if a horse is priced quite low then its priced like that for a reason... Even just the basic safe ones seem to command higher prices than your budget. It'll be especially hard as you can't have a cobby / native type!

I've got a 4 yr old 16hh (stands at this now will grow) irish sports horse gelding (he's lost his papers though
frown.gif
due to stupid lorry driver giving me the wrong irish horses passport and now can't remember what he's done with it) chestnut. He's gangly, green but can really jump (loosed over 1.25 yesterday) but needs a lot of work and has a bit of attitude (not nasty just opinions on everything, quite cheeky for an irish horse) . He could be within your budget, wasn't going to sell him yet and keep him to produce but his rider has peed us off by not turning up for work for 2 days so he's now on the market. PM if sounds any good.

I have been looking for 8 months now for a 15-15.2 connemara or Irish Draught who is safe sane and sensible but can do dressage and riding club stuff. Have seen absolutely loads and most have not been sound so haven't even tried them. Found a super one who failed the vet at 5 and just missed a couple who sounded perfect. I have driven all over the country and my budget is £6,500 and I still can't find something. I do have the perfect horse at home but he has damaged his suspensory ligs and has bone spavin poor boy so can only be ridden occasionally. Where have all the middleweight hunter types gone!!

is there a reason you don't want anything over 11? I just thought with your issues
grin.gif
you might struggle to bring something on younger and you are much more likely to find something a bit older lighter to ride rather than a 4yo which although safe might be a bit unbalanced.

I can understand the wide issue too as both me and mum struggle with things too wide but although he looks wide my welshie isnt really, he looks wider than friends newfie but when you are on top he isnt!

I do think you should find something though.

If you look on horsequest to show horses, county level about 24 horses down there is a lovely grey Irish draught, might be a bit on the old side of what you are after though.

Thanks guys

Kezz I really appreciate your help....I live in Stafford and right now not prepared to travel too far as been there and done that only to waste time and money I just can't afford to do it as will have nothing left at this rate So only 1 to 1.5 hrs travelling so kent/sussex/yourkshire all too far. SORRY

As for age, I am not wanting anything older than 11yrs as it has to last me 4 yrs and to keep the odds good of it doing that I was advised by my vet on age. I do know there are many exceptions

no I can understand that too, I was all up for buying something older but got a 12 year old. It took me a couple of years to get to grips with him but we have enjoyed a fab couple of years competing. But I am now trying to increase in his dressage prowess now (he will be 17 in March) just in case. Though he is still jumping fab will be hunting etc etc. Though I think that can depend on type you do keep it in mind.

I have 2 to see tomorrow and 4 on Tues all locally so you never know. However they are both dealers so ??? one in Uttoxeter and one Keele

Umm, you are basically describing the perfect horse then - which are like golddust. I was going to say try a riding school and see if you could buy a horse off them but they are most likely going to have cobby types that need lots of leg...

Good luck!

I would have thought that to find the horse you may get one that has its own problems, such as arthritis or maybe an old tendon issue.

Well, I know of one for sale but as in Yorks we're probably too far.

http://www.niddvalleyridingclub.org.uk/adverts.html

They have had her since a 4 yo (she is now 9), she used to be a hurdler. She has been used as a mother/daughter hack and for dressage and RC SJ. Her only problem is XC really isn't her thing (although to be honest I am not sure whether it's just a case of needing someone to push her a bit more!) Still, she is fine SJing as far as I am aware although they do more dressage with her.

She is very local to us and owned my the secretary of the nidd valley RC. She is hacked out a lot on her own or in company - that's probably what she does 95% of the time. She certainly wouldn't be too wide for you anyway!

I know you said no greys but I really like the look of this one.

... also when I was looking for Lina I wanted a 16.2 bay gelding after over 30 horses I came home with a 15.2 grey mare, it wasn't even her I had gone to see ! 6 years later we have done so much together and I wouldn't swap her for the world she has a home for life now. (plus she hates the mud)

Where do you live ? I can keep my eyes open for you whilst window shopping
