Those lorries with Ifor Williams type box on them - anyone used one?

I am desperate to find some transport and get out and about to shows etc again, but there is no-one at the yard who is doing the low level stuff which I want to do

I've found one of those lorries which have an Ifor Williams trailer on the back for hire locally - are they any good? Easy to drive? Here is a link:

I would just be taking a 15.2hh TB so not a big horse

I hired one many years ago to move a pony but he was only 13h, I have not driven one with a horse in but I did look at a couple while looking for my current lorry. Personally I did not like them, I found that they felt a little unstable, swaying etc. This could of course, be to do with what they were mounted on, one was a transit and one was a LDV, neither were exactly new! I bought an LT35 with a GC Smiths caochbuilt body on which I love to pieces, it is very stable and much nicer to drive than the others.

It looks ok to me if its just for hiring for one horse the odd time, they are however quite high so as said before the may feel a little top heavy and the ramp angle ??? try it if you dont get on with it dont hire it again...

Forgot to say - I found front ramp very steep and the angle they have to turn to exit is quite sharp. I would not be happy using it without a gate on at least the left (as you stand at the top) This was another reason I did not fancy it and the main reason I went for a side ramp (Much wider and not as steep)

Thanks J_L, this echoes my thoughts about them exactly, even though I have never used one! I would love an LT35, my friends had one and it was a fab little box, just no money to get anything of my own

I've hired this box!
I used it to collect a friend's youngster who'd never travelled before. He travelled like a dream, it felt surprisingly stable and was very easy to drive. The people who hired it out were very helpful and accommodating too (I couldn't quite manage to get it back within the 24 hours but they didn't mind and didn't charge extra!)

So all in all, I'd recommend it; I will certainly use it again.

Oh! Well that has changed my mind now

It is based just next to where I work (Plough Lane) so I googled it

Mind you hiring, even at only £80 a day, to go and do a £8 dressage test is a bit

Please people, stop me thinking longingly about a loan and my own lorry

I've driven a friends one. Easy to drive and I didn't find it unstable. However, the ramps are very steep and the front one is a tight angle.

This is mine and I love it. I've had it 4 years and its great. Yes the ramp is steep and you wouldn't want to go out in very high winds. Mine has a single breast bar which I want to change. I only ususally carry my 14.1hh cob and its fine for local shows. Go for it I wish I'd taken the plunge years ago and bought one. [image]

I had one first of all on a Transit then when that died, had the body put on a Merc Sprinter.

My little 15.1hh TB went everywhere in it and I loved it to bits but the young horse had other ideas and disliked the lack of head room, steep ramp etc. I sold it in the end and got a bigger, rear facing box.

The Ifor boxes are great but will not take two big horses, they are designed for a couple of 15.2's. The box alone weighs 850KG so not a lot of payload.

I had (before I was a bit more knowledgeable) an Ifor box on a transit body. Never again, centre of gravity is way to high on them and they roll like no-one's business. Over 13.2hh I would put in one on that height of chassis.
