I know Oat Straw is the preferred straw of choice for feeding as forage. Does anyone feed barley straw instead?

Cheers

:)

Mine have eaten both wheat and barley straw with great relish for a number of years without coming to any harm. Before anyone jumps on me this has been from their bedding, sometimes in preference to the hay provided, and no this wasnt manky hay.
Many years ago we had a very bad year for hay but a good one for straw and I fed barley straw as a main source of fibre. I also used a feed balancer and this worked well.
Some people have exprerienced colic from feeding straw.

For the first time this year I have fed my ponies half hay and half straw. I am feeding good clean Barley straw and they certainly aren't turning thier noses up at it.

I paid £7.56 a bale of hay (£160 a tonne) and £3.00 for a bale of straw!

i feed half and half well just over half of hay. mine seem to enjoy it too. they all get feed too incase they are lacking certain nutrients ext. and i have done this for years with no problems. mine is £18 for 5ft6 round bale of straw and £35 for hay round both very good quality. you should make sure if you are feeding hay or straw it isnt too dusty.

i find feeding straw and hay is fab for poor doers in winter it just seems to help bulk them up a bit. but it is you choice what to feed. as long as it is good quality you shouldnt have problems with it. x
