Hiya.

I was just wondering if you have a share document like you would have if your loaning properly? Or is it not as appropriate as the horse is still at my yard and in my care.

What do you have if anything?

Thank you.

Vicki :)

I don't have anything.
We just communicate regularly to make sure we are still both on the right track and anything small gets nipped in the bud. This is a 2 way street as well, so I can pick up on things her owner does. I just voice it tactfully, often asking "why are we doing xyz?" so she doesn't think I am taking over etc.

If I had been presented with a document to sign with an agreement, I would happily have signed it though.

i don't for my sharer, as she's only 14 i'm always there when she rides so I'm always in charge;) if it was an adult who was going to be riding when i wasn't there and they were being trusted to look after my horse in my absence then i think i would have a basic agreement just setting out what was expected of them on their days, just to help clarify things so you don't get that 'oh i didn't know you wanted me to xyz' situation :)

I share my best friends horse, we don't have anything contract wise as we've known each other for a long time but if it was someone I didn't know I'd have one xx

I've never had anything and been sharing with the same lady now for nearly 10 years! I've shared two of her horses and am trusted to ride her other one too, whether she is there or not.
She's been nice enough to let me come back from uni and go to the yard whenever I want to, and we usually ride out together which is nice - I give her lifts to and from the yard when I'm home and she helps me out letting me share the girls :)
However, from the horror stories I've heard, I think I have been incredibly lucky in finding such a lovely genuine person - if it was me taking on someone I didn't know, in this day and age I'd have something in place even if its just to state the days, any payment and what can and can't be done. It doesn't hurt to have it.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I thought I should perhaps have a little something although he's my horse and I will mostly be there with her and she doesn't need to do any of the care so that isn't a problem. Maybe I'll just do something saying days, payments and notice period :)

I've shared quite a few horses over the years and never had a contract until I had my last share. The owner got a contract from the BHS website I believe I think its worth doing because it protects the owner and the sharer and most importantly the horse. Its all down to individual preference though at the end of the day. :)

When I had a share with another member on her we tweaked the bhs loan agreement, put days that I had to do, what was to be done on those days, activities I could do, who was liable for vets bills, payment etc.

I'm a sharer. Horse is on same yard as my horse. We have an agreement in place mostly for horses protection and, importantly, to state what I may authorise if there is an emergency and I can't get hold of his owner. I can send you a copy of my agreement if you want?

I would always have an agreement with the sharers for my horse, the current one confirms:

how much they pay each month, that it is paybale in advance, if they choose not to ride, then I do not refund them, the days they ride, exactly what they can and cant do, that they must wear a hat when riding, that no one else can ride my horse without my prior permission, they they have personal accident insurance, notice period etc

Bad experience in the past has left me cautious but I have never had a sharer say no to signing it.
