I always tend to do a semi 'normal' bed on top of matting, and at the back of the stable so half way up and BIG banks.....i like to do big banks....my old boy used them as pillows
some sprinkle shavings and thats it, some have a tiny corner only...
I first put down about three inches just in their bathroom spot and then whilst they are walking around they spread it out around the stall.
By the end of the week there is about an inch everywhere.
I have a full bed on top - whilst I realise the point of these mats is that you don't need a full bed it is my personal preference to have a decent bed. The main advantage of mats for me is B is a digger and roller in the stable - so if he does wreck his bed at least he isn't through to concrete!
Our gelding is very messy! We use a product called Arden safe mix (a little similar to easibed), we have it covering just under half of stable and it is prob a couple of inches thick.
Luckily the stable is on a very slight slope so wee drains away mainly xx
I lay a single bale of shavings in the back corner of the stable where my filly 9normally ) pees, and scatter some of it forward to create a very thin layer over a 4' x 4' area. Over that, I scatter a layer straw over the shavings. During the week I skip out the poops and wet in the straw and replace clean straw over the shavings as needed. At the weekend I clean out all of the shavings and relay another bale under the straw. I've tried lots of different bedding types and methods of managing it over the past 5 years and find the above methods work best for me and my VERY VERY dirty filly.
The guy I bought my mats from was ADAMANT that you should use no less than a bucket of shavings max. However, I have tried several bedding products - I quite like the Aquamax but can't find it locally - I do find that there is not enough to soak up the wee and any water dripping from the haynet - result = 1 smelly horse if he lays down. But, can't see the point in paying out for mats and then using tons of bedding on top either and aas he is only turned away atm I'm not too bothered.
Have the world's messiest horse and use shavings at edge of area(he's in a 14x14 box, so area I bed is probably 6x6) and MEGAZORB in middle. It is fantastic, soaks up all the wet,and the stable doesn't pong like when I only used shavings.
