Those of you that tow with freelanders...

had a diesel a few years ago, towed an Ifor Williams and 450kg horse. Towed fine. As for thecar, wouldnt have another given, totally unreliable, always something wrong with it (and it was brand new) Mind the same goes for the Disco's as well! Ive heard the Sorento's (Kia) are very good for towing. I had a navara which was the best.

I see we have yet another thread with the wrong info on towing.

There is no need to downplate a trailer unless it is either more than 3.5 tonnes when towing on a B+E licence or the plated weight is more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle when towing on a B licence

I will yet again make this point crystal clear -
There is no law that says the plated MAM of the trailer cannot be more than the towing capacity of the towing vehicle

As perfect11s has rightly stated - the towing capacity restricts the actual weight being towed which is the empty weight of the trailer plus the weight of the load on it.

Blimey!! - we deffo need a sticky on this subject

More rubbish talked about towing its the weight you are towing not the design weights you muppet....read the other posts on towing or look up the facts before you post rubbish and misinfomation.....

You could replate
your horse instead:D

only if you have the right licence !!! look up the other threads on towing to get the facts....

Right so you are who with the DVLA and also work for trailer companies yes :D This is advice I have had FROM the DVAL and straight from Ifor so myabe you should be ringing these companies and telling them they are giving customers wrong advice.

I can only pass on what I know coming from the authorities and manufacturers, there is not need to be derogatory as TBF if your not going to two more than 2tonne then a replating aint gonna do no harm is it ?

So go replate your face ;) :D :D :D

There is nothing to stop you downplating if you wish to waste your own money on something which does not need doing by law BUT.... consider this ....

Lets say you have a towing capacity of 2 tonnes and a trailer with a plated MAM of 2.5 tonnes and then downplate it to 2 tonnes but accidently overload it by 250kgs
You get done twice - once for exceeding the towing capacity and then for exceeding the trailer plated MAM
If you had not downplated it then only the one offence would have been done

I have second the weight issue.ifor williams contested the law and it is now changed to the actual weight not max weight. Also spoke to transport office which they confirmed :)

The Freelander and the XTrail (and anything else of about the same size) are "lite" 4x4s - with a towing capacity of 2 tonnes or less (some XTrails can only tow 1350kg!) they're really not up to towing anything more than ponies in small trailers, or a single. The XTrail though IS a good car according to my OH and as others have said, Freelanders, but most Landys in one way or another, do not have the best rep for reliability.

If you tow with a non 4x4 then it is recommended that you stick to the Caravan Club's recommendation of towing only 85% of the kerb weight of your car.

The law has not changed on this issue for many many years but quite a few 'trailer people' did not understand the laws especially the different laws between B and BE towing and often mixed up both to get 'their own laws'

If the law was contested by anyone and a change was instigated then that change would be in the road traffic ammendments - but it aint !!

just to say that the new diesel xtrail is advertised for towing horses and there was a big spread in h & h a little while ago but cant remember how much it said it could tow. i have a TD4 freelander and wouldnt want to tow with it except in a emergency and then would only take 1 horse....

Well you can all fall out about what the law actually says forever if you like, enjoy!

My personal view, and I have towed a lot of different trailers with a variety of vehicles. Yes I was one of those people in the history books with a Volvo estate and Rice trailer.

I think anyone who even approaches the maximum weight allowed for a vehicle is an idiot. Yes you might get away with it for ever, but if something goes wrong you will know about it.

After several bad experiences (with legal outfits) I wont tow with anything which is not over and above the minimum.

A large powerful heavy towing vehicle can get you out of trouble, they have the power, weight and brakes to do so.

s bloom the x trail im talking about is new out this year and the advert was in a very recent h & h,so doesnt seem to show in the article you have looked at. i agree the old xtrails would not be capable of towing anything much and would even prefer my freelander to an older x trail if i was towing,(which im not).

see what tickles me is people go oh no dont touch a freelander with a towing weight of
2t which is exactly the same as a santa fe... and most saloons which people seem to recomend as an alternative to a 4x4, actually most saloons i have looked into, such as a mondeo that has a towing capacity of 1.8t.
My friend had a freelander and it actually pulled very nicely, i am going to look at one myself 2moro , an 04 td4 2l diesel. I have a very old disco that costs a fortune in fuel just to tow one horse once in a blue moon to local events so im downsizing. I was hoping to get a santa fe but the diesel ones are like hens teeth!

All I can say to you is whatever the vehicle manufacturer thinks it can tow, do you believe it stands any hope in Hades of stopping that weight at short notice? The closer you are to the max weight the less chance you stand. Personally, I think even with safest set up there's a degree of luck to that, but why stack the odds against you?

How did you get on with your viewing of the vehicle?

Very well. i pick it up saturday. They are a huge improvment on the pre 2003 models. it felt nice and sturdy even at high speeds. Its suitable for going down the rutty track to the horses and chucking the dog in the back but small enough to park in a busy town centre where i work. I will let you know what it is like to tow with if i ever get the opportunity. I am saving up for a brand new ifor single as i only ever take one horse out and second hand ones are not easy to find! I generally only tow local as if we are going far we usually go in the lorrys.

i did alot of research before going back to the garage today to commit to buy, the 2004 onwards td4 models are much better and the caravaners gave them good reviews towing their caravans in the coutryside. we will see :-) im looking forward to being able to fit in a parking space rather than driving round and round in the bus of a disco just to find a big enough space ;-)
