One of my horses is up for part loan and I have a few people interested. I have asked that there be a financial contribution, however wasn't sure I'd have much of a response so never actually worked out how much I might want from a sharer.
So I need your help. Hypothetically let's say sharer does 3 days a week, rides all 3 days and does jobs. What would they be expected to contribute?
Those of you who share, what do you pay? Those who have sharers, what do your sharers pay?

I wonder if this will get removed.....

I have charged 65 a month for this, before that I charged 30 but became a bit resentful that there was a lot of horse for not much money. 65 is still Cheap but it is because I am grateful that she would then be ridden more than I can offer. I would say you could charge up to 100 depending on what you are getting out of it? Will horse be brought on for example?

I have a sharer.... Some would call it a loan.

My sharer pays £100 per month. She can ride as many days as she likes, I check pony everyday so if she's busy at work i know he's ok. I keep my other horses at the same yard anyway. I pay all vet fee's, farrier, dentist and anything else he needs. I also added her to his insurance policy so if anything happens I have peace of mind :-)

My sharer is amazing, loves him as much as I do! Good luck

I have a sharer for 1 of mine & my mum has a sharer for her cob. Both sharers can have unlimited riding within reason, but both only really ride twice a week (their choice). They both pay £100 a month each, but they don't have to do any chores, just come & ride. :)

I do both. My boy is semi-retired due to foot problems so I have a sharer for him and share my best friend's horse so I can compete - she has two young kids so can't do it all so it works really well for all three of us:D

I have my share horse 4 days a week (Thurs-Sun) which is great as it means I can ride out with my sharer too as otherwise I'd never see her what with doing opposite days. My sharer does 3 days a week (2 weekdays and a Saturday) and pays £60 a month - she's been paying this for 5 years. Despite my costs having risen I haven't asked any more as she's lovely, does a great job, loves him as much as I do and cares for him as well as I do (if not better:o) so I'm happy. Some would say she's getting a great deal, but I think I'm the lucky one.

I wanted to ask for a financial contribution to find someone who was committed and not just out for a free ride, but the most important thing for me was to get some help as I really wanted to share my friend's horse when I got the chance but couldn't manage both.

The £60 I get from my sharer goes straight to my share horse's owner, so I'm no better off financially but that's horses!

I've always been very lucky! I paid £20 a month to do as much or as little as I liked a few years back then when owner was moving I had him full time but she paid all the costs!

I now have a couple of sharers but I don't charge anything as I'm just grateful for the help as I struggle quite a bit to keep him exercised myself!

I've seen shares advertised recently at £25 a week, £40 per month and £5 per visit

It does depend where you live, if it's London the cost is much higher to share. Also the horse and what sort of riding and facilities they are getting, the nicer the horse and the better facilities the more you can probably charge

I've also seen shares where the sharer pays for shoes and wormers as their costs

My sharer paid £100 a month for 4 days a week riding. I worked out roughly how much it cost me to keep my horse for a month, livery, feed, shoes, hay, wormers, bedding etc., and then halved it!

I share, although I feel mine may be a little expensive.... I have him 4 days per week but only ride 3 (as he needs 1 day off per week), I do all chores and pay £110pcm, plus half his shoes every 6 weeks. However he has been sold (although returned again - long story) so I have been on the look out for a new share, and found a variation in prices, some want £60 per month but this was a very basic yard with no facilities and only hacking. Others want £100 per month but that was full livery so no chores required, and that was at a yard with indoor school, outdoor school and swimming pool so I felt that was the best value that I'd seen whilst looking!

Look at your costs and work out what it would be if you roughly halved them, and take it from there. If you are wanting your sharer to do all chores it might be fairer to charge a little less as they are doing you a big favour.

my sharer pays me £20 per wk in winter and £15 per wk spring-autumn. she pays half towards his shoes and has use of him every day. I do all the mucking out and general husbandry so she has time to ride.

I share at the moment but I'm very lucky and don't pay anything, his owner just lacks time to exercise him. He's stabled at home, lives out as much as possible, there is only a fenced off grass area to school in but there are some jumps and fabulous hacking. I can ride him 4 days a week but only do 3 at the moment but may change to 4 when the evenings get darker as his owner will be able to ride even less.

My first share I paid £100 a month, did all chores AM & PM on my two days, had an outdoor school and good hacking and he was a good horse. I do feel I was charged a little too much given I was doing chores on my day but then I did get some extra days free if his owner was away or something.

My current share is pretty much the perfect arrangement, I love the horse to bits, if his owner ever sold him I'd have him straight away. His owner is lovely, I don't have to do chores but do muck out/clean tack etc usually once a week. And his owner and I get on really well and have been out hunting together once and are going on a sponsored ride too. The horse is only 6 so any experience he's getting is good, so far I've taught him to walk through puddles and go over some small XC jumps out hacking when his owner said he didn't jump! I would happily pay £100 a month for him, or more, but thankfully his owner doesn't need the money as realistically I couldn't afford it!

I used to pay £60pcm in summer, £80pcm in winter.

Half livery & feed.

I had free use of the horse unless owner wanted to ride (fitted round busy schedule and kids so I got plenty of riding time) however owner was very close friend. I'd expect same sort of price with set days (2/3) for what I was paying in general.

I charge my sharer £60 per month but she only rides her in the school, not hacking and in the winter she will do the winter bits too ,get in and turn out and muck out stable.she seems quite happy with this and it seems to be working well.

Mine is shared for 15 a week so 60 a month, not expensive and horse is brilliant, yet no replies!!
I have seen some places charging over 100 for a horse needing an experienced rider,or some up to 200 a month for a DIY youngster that needs breaking! They ask YOU to pay them to break their horse in! Awful!

Hi i have a sharer for my old boy at £20 per week , we did start at weekends only as she's 15yo and at school but in the holidays she comes as many days as she likes , she love's my horse i think more than i do :) and is now part of the yard family, but i did have some very odd phone calls when i put him up for share ie i will do all yard jobs for a free ride which sounds lovely but my horse is very well schooled and a fab hack so felt some £ would be expected :) i also have 2 more so am there anyway .

I did pay £100 a month for 5 days a week no jobs but we had to be there at 9am and couldn't actually do Tuesdays as the school was in use and there's no hacking.

Now I pay £80 a month and muck out/feed. There is some hacking and lovely school. This is for a pony for 2 days a week as it is £10 per day. The owner has another sharer that also pays the same for 2 days. Generally around here is starts at £10 per day but then if you do 3 or 4 days it is a bit less so maybe £25 or £30.

I charge £20 per week plus half the shoes (£33.75) every 6 weeks. She has 3 days a week, rides on those days plus full duties on the weekend day - on the weekdays I do it all in the mornings so she can just ride. She has lessons on her and will eventually have the chance to compete if things go well

I pay £20/week for 3 days plus extra to the YO for any extra jobs (week day turn out. Soon this will have to include week day bring in as they come in mighty early in the winter and I can't make it up in time from work). I think this is a very fair deal, I also joined the BHS so I would have 3rd party cover.

I have two sharers who ride once or twice a week each, very flexible with times and days.

They pay £5 a time as I have no facilities, only hacking. However if the facilities were good (decent school) I'd be asking £10 a day.

I work partly on the basis that a lesson round here is £30 an hour! That'd be 6 days riding for a sharer!

I think it depends on what kind of deal and horse you are getting for the share...

My first share was a riding school horse that I paid £120/month for 2 days per week...and sometimes she'd been used for lessons all morning by the time I came up to ride in the afternoon so not really worth it. However, I needed a safe horse that I could learn the ropes with under supervision and I guess that's what I was forking out for.

Another share, I had 3/4 days per week and paid half costs, plus my own insurance; the owner gave me occasional lessons on me but I could do whatever I wanted with him and she was really short on time so was helping her out quite a lot.

I'd normally say about £10 per day is the average though...

I ask £25 per week for riding twice and just poo picking on the day they ride as they live out all year. All happy hacking , no facilities. Based the price on the fact it costs around £30 per hack at local riding schools . Cant say it is profitable but does help towards costs etc

Have paid £150 unlimited riding for a horse before - so that would be about half of livery fee alone, then the owner paid shoeing/worming on top. Was probably the most I'd pay, but the horse was soooo worth it! The best horse I've ever come across. Will be very hard to find anything like him again.

Then got unlimited riding for free because the lady needed her horse exercising - however, I felt cheeky so tried to do as many jobs around the yard as possible in return. The owner later told me she needed to find someone who would pay so I decided I'd pay - that was £130, but decided after a while that it was too much for the horse - problems with the facillities, no one there I got on with, no hacking, no longer had the money to compete.

I then paid £15 a week - was going to be 2-3days a week but had unlimited riding most of the time.

Then paid £20 a week for 3 days but had been very lucky in that I got extra days every now and then. This was probably the most share like.

I don't know whether you'd charge more or less for chores on top of riding? I'm a bit backwards in my thinking, but if I had to do chores, I'd want to pay less, although by doing chores I'm almost 'owning' the horse for those days so would in theory be having more responsibility so would probably be asked to pay more????

Anyway, from all my experience - how much you charge depends on the horse, the facilities, the person sharing. People have often said that they'd charge me less because I wasn't working at the time and thus they felt it was more important the horse was being 'educated'. But then, like the first horse described, I wanted a school master and to move on in my riding so the owner could charge more.

£20-25 a week seems to be the going rate around here for 2-3 days a week, regardless of livery type. I don't pay for my current share or for any of the other horses I ride atm, but I have paid £50 and £100 a month in the past for anything from 2 to 4 days a week. Depends on individual circumstances, really

I used to have a sharer I charged her £25 per week, horse us competing at and has points at novice bd, jumps well hacks alone and in company. But he is quirky! Good facilities and she had him 3 x a week. When he is out we have to do 4 barrows poo picking a week so asked her to do one of them for me. No longer have sharer due to promotion and pairwise and I hated sharing him. But she now shares s friend of mines horse for same amount.
