do you always ride primarily on the snaffle rein? or does anyone have a horse that needs riding on the 2nd set?

there is a cob on the yard that has a HUGE neck, and also likes to lean as his confo is downhill, so the owner uses the 2nd set quite a lot as he just ignores the snaffle rein, just wondering if this was the norm for a big strong cob? or maybe the pelham isn't the right combo for this horse as i always though pelham = lots of breaks so would have to ask very lightly but her horse doesn't seem to react much?

He is probably very unbalanced and on his forehand, which creates the leaning effect and means his owner is probably having to 'prop him up' with the curb rein.

:)

A pelham may not be the most suitable bit as using the bottom rein will be encouraging the horse to lower his head, the top rein, snaffle effect will raise the head, a double bridle used correctly would give a clearer message to the horse and help prevent leaning.

I have always used a Pelham on my old cob. To be honest he is just a happy hacker for the most part. I would tend to ride on the buckles 99% of the time as he is very good at balancing himself. However when he decided to go he was just about unstoppable, even with the Pelham. I would just grab the curb rein and pray. To be honest I could have ridden without the snaffle rein at all for what we do.

We also use a Pelham in our little cob, she goes much better in it than a snaffle, does not lean as much and has more respect for it. It also stops her setting her neck and doing what she wants, a habit quite a lot of cobs acquire.

I use a pelham on my cob. I believe that she prefers the use of several pressure points rather than just her mouth, and a simpler mouthpiece.

I like to keep a contact on the top rein, and use it in a very precise on/off manner. I've tried her in a double, but she won't take 2 mouthpieces.

I seriously think Pelhams are almost made for tank cobs! Used to ride mine in a Pelham. Not that I wanted to but for self preservation, it was a must.

Thankfully, I met Fiona foy, and she, within a few months converted my Pelham only please spotty cob to a snaffle mouthed dream!!!

It can be done but I think a Pelham has its place :)
