Which fuel pump do you use?

If it's my 'usual' garage, the HGV pump as the canopy is too low to get the lorry in. In other garages depends on canopy height, ease of access, queues, etc!

In the past I have used HGV if there was one available, however I was told I shouldn't once by the person behind the till when I paid as I blocked up a pump for HGV's who Had no option, whereas I could fit into an ordinary pump. But yesterday when I went to an ordinary pump to fill up, I was really told off and made to feel completely stupid by the man behind the till for using the normal pump. Firstly he tried to tell me I was a HGV (I swiftly told him otherwise), then he went on to tell me how having put (just) over £100 of diesel in my lorry I would have run the pump dry! Hence I wondered what others did!

Well I think I may have retaliated to both that they should firstly be grateful for your business (whatever happened to customer service?), secondly, if it's that much of an issue to them, some appropriate signage might be in order, and thirdly what's the problem with others having to queue (whatever vehicle they're in), filling up and paying only takes 5-10 minutes?!

And just to add, loads of vehicles take more than £100 worth of fuel with the prices as they are these days!

I've had this too! If I get told off at the HGV pump I say I didn't want to block the smaller ones, and if I get told off at the smaller ones I tell them at 7.5t I am not actually an HGV!
 
If I go to a service station I tend to use the HGV pump as it fills up way quicker but i usually use the garage down the road which has only normal pumps and no-one has ever told me off, th roof is high enough and i dont block any other bays.
 
Pretty much always use the HGV one...it is usually empty (or has a few small queue at least) and is much easier to access; sometimes the normal pumps are situated close to the shop/paying building so it is difficult to maneuver the lorry out once you've paid!
 
you must have really miserable staff at your local garage they wouldn't cope at all with me :o
my local garage don't have an hgv bay , also my wagon doesn't really fit (well it does but i wouldn't get back out) going in the "in" way so i drive in the "out" way , block two pumps and cause havock getting back out :o they just smile and say hello :D
i do try to go when it is quiet though
 
I fill up in the middle of Bristol at Sainsburys normally and they have no HGV pumps - never been told off. My husbands pick up takes more fuel than my lorry, I can just about squeeze in £100 if I try really really hard. I am also do a bit of shopping normally while I am in there - need snacks!

I thought 7.5t were HGVs - just private HGVs, which I like as the 2+ lanes in Bristol allow HGVs and it saves me queuing in traffic.
 
I do use both & never been told off. I use HGV pump if I can as easier to get in & out of forecourts. I've used the HGV pump many times when filling up at services on the M1 but I always feel really small next to the monster lorries that fill up there!
 
You tend to find that to use the hgv pumps you must leave payment before the pump is activated. I don't mind leaving a fuel card but no way will I leave any sort of bank or credit card with them. ( always presume they will have made 20 copies of it in the time I fuel up !). With some horse boxes the larger nozzles of thr HGV pumps struggle to fit in so using general pumps is a must.
The fuel station that is a disgrace though is South Mimms that ban HGV's from the fuel station because there is a separate truck stop which charges 5-7 pence per litre than the car diesel ( I know there is no difference in diesel for cars and trucks!)

What a load of rubbish! My brother's work van takes nearly £150 of diesel and no one would think to look twice at him due to a van, I bet the man just hated having a large vehicle at the pumps!
 
Sounds like the guy has nothing better to do than moan! I regularly block pumps putting 100 quids worth of diesel in a landy and trailer on the general use pumps as i wouldn't be allowed to use the fast ones anyway and I've never run the pump dry or had a complaint. I can't see the issue whichever you do, HGVs are putting in £1000 worth usually so waiting til you put your hundred quids worth in is hardly going to be an issue for them anyway.
 
I use whatever is most easily available (length of queue and access) Although i must remind myself to go for the normal pump at Fleet services as they now have signs up saying you must leave some form of payment or your keys with them before they will activate the pump (i realise lots of places do this) But it is bloody annoying to have to park up, go in and be nice to them, leave keys (no way in hell are they getting my card!) go back, fill up, go back in again and actually pay. OP sounds as though your guy was just having a bad day, can't imagine they can operate very well if their tanks can only hold a couple of hundred quids worth of diesel...they'd empty them in 20 minutes!
