Hey guys

I'm about to buy either a 1003XL or a 1003XXL. I've never actually seen one in the flesh but i've heard fantastic things about them and they really are my only legal option due to my tow vehicle (i've done all my sums with the help of ROG and his fantastic towing thread).

Can you tell me:

1. Is it worth going for the XXL for that bit of extra room or is the XL sufficient?
2. In your experience what height horse can they take comfortably (I understand it will be alot to do with head carriage as well).

I'm having to bite the bullet and buy a brand new one as 2nd hand ones are like hens teeth especially up my way (Scotland). Plus they seem to hold their value so well that it makes more financial sense in the long run to get a new one.

Thanks guys xx

I have a 1003XL

I think you will find that the XXL has a higher MAM and so will differ in your calculations, for me I could not tow the XXL due to the extra MAM.

I have had my 16.2 ISH who wears 6ft9 rugs in the trailer once, height wise it was ok but length wise chest to tail it is a bit short for her. Also had a friends 16hh show cob 6ft6 rugs and he fitted in fine.

Personally I am looking to retake my towing test and get a bigger trailer, height and length to accomodate my 16.2 better.

Cheers for your reply Shellonabeach. I'm a bit surprised that it was a bit of a squeeze for your 16.2hh as it as an internal height exactly inbetween that of an Ifor 505 and 510. By those calculations it should fit a 17hh in. Mind you, you stated it was the length that was the issue.

I'm just starting out again after a 2 year break having a baby. I'm on the lookout for a horse at the moment too (there's nothing around! Maybe just the time of year) and am coming to the conclusion that i'll not be able to get anything bigger than 16.2hh due to the trailer i'm limited to. Bit of a pain as i'm almost 6ft. Being mobile (able to get out and about) is really important to me and massive part of having a horse so I guess it will just be a case of only looking at horses that will fit in my trailer.

Hey ROG

Am I still correct in thinking I can down-plate (or whatever it's called) it to keep the trailer and tow vehicle MAM combined under 3500kg (to stay legal on my post-1997 licence)?

I'd be more than happy with the XL but suppose it would be handy to have more space width wise for tacking up etc in the XXL.

Yes you can get the MANUFACTURER to downplate it (they send you new plates which may cost a nominal fee) but as the xxl has a higher unladen weight then work out what weight you can load into it once it is downplated before deciding which to buy

ROG

B licence

TOW VEHICLE
Towing capacity (braked) 1800kg
Kerb weight 1570kg
Gross vehicle weight/MAM 2145kg
GTW 3810kg

TRAILER OPTIONS
XL trailer MAM = 1400kg
XXL trailer MAM = 1600kg

So which could I legally get away with and what would I have to get them downplated to?

Also, I will be putting approx 16.2hh horse into it so about 600kg.

God this is so confusing. You must be sick of all us women and our questions ;)

B licence

TOW VEHICLE
Towing capacity (braked) 1800kg
Kerb weight 1570kg
Gross vehicle weight/MAM 2145kg
GTW 3810kg

TRAILER OPTIONS - downplated to 1350
XL trailer MAM = 1400kg - unladen 655 - max load 695
XXL trailer MAM = 1600kg - unladen 732 - max load 618

Horse/load 600
Trailer would need to be downplated to 1350 which would then be legal for B licence towing 1350+2145=3495

You might be a bit too close on load weight if you go for the xxl

I have a 1003xl and my 17hh travels beautifully in it although he is lw and easily fits in a 6ft9 rug. I wouldn't want to put a bigger / heavier horse in there. He loads much better into it than he does in a 510 as its so roomy inside.

Hiya. I saw on Facebook the other day that you're looking for a horse at the moment. It's me who used to share LEO. Just spotted your signature pics and recognised you. I've just bought a single ifor trailer for Pip so am currently reading all the reviews about single trailers. I actually think a cheval would be great if you can find one. They seem even harder to get a hold of than the ifors. Good luck with your hunt for both horsey and trailer xx
