Those of you with andalusian, cobs or any thing with long manes and tails!!

Animal Barrier Healthcare mane and tail spray put on once/twice a week, mane put into bunches (not plaits) - which are taken out every other day - mane brushed through and re-bunched, neck rugs for turnout rugs but not in stable (for now) - seems to be working :)

As for tails, baby oil/ mane and tail conditioner and only brushed out once/twice a week :)

My fella has to be in a full neck because otherwise he would rub it out!!! When he's naked and I'm around, it's the first thing he looks to do.

That said, he's been on Brewer's Yeast for a year and this has made him far less itchy. I comb through with my fingers, wash infrequently, do use a smear of baby oil on it. His mane was a lot thicker when I first got him, BUT he was kept in a field that literally had no trees and there was an inner electric fence so he coudln't scratch on the post and rail. Also, the yard he was at when he first came to the UK was high up and windswept, whereas I'm in a wooded valley with rivers - hence more flies!

Anyway, it seems to be improving again.

My Highland (floor-length white tail) spends the winter in a TailGator and I don't know how I ever lived without it!

He turns out in it no problem - we've gone from "mudlocks" and stained tail to something like that in the photo on the site. I use a proper hairband (not plaiting bands) to fasten the plait and redo it about once a week. The tail's generally in much better condition all year round now because I have to wash and brush it far less.

The company's Survivor Detangler is also really good and doesn't make the hair brittle like some can. Just don't get it on your reins!!!

The original hair colour is white.

Tail - plaited and in a Tailgator bag.
Feather - babyoil and Flours (?sp) of sulphur every fortnight.
Mane - ignored. :D Gave up with necks on rugs - they just break the mane off at the roots.

I've got a pure arab, (with a lovely long mane and tail) who lives out 24/7 all year round. This time of year I spray just a little of the NAF Mane and Tail Detangler, leave it in for a day or so, then give it a good brush through. It keeps his mane and tail looking reasonably clean and tangle free. It smells lovely too!

Lots and lots of mane and tail detangler which keeps the mud off and temptation to brush. We bought this weird clay stuff for his feathers which made them all sparkly White and pretty for a show :D we also have this spray on stuff for grass and stable stains which works a treat! I think it's called Easy White from derby house :)

Ps. I know, I'm wearing ALL the wrong stuff for a coloured class, first time!! We still came last anyway because knobber pony decided he really didn't feel like trotting and would much rather play with the crazy stallion in the next ring!

my andalusian came with a seriously long thick mane and tail from spain last year, he was kept in 24/7 and was steel grey with a black mane and tail ..... one year later his tail still long and thick ... mane half as short and thin .... and coat/mane completely bleached ... now he is white/grey ... main reason of loss of thickness is gelded (so not as much testosterone - hence why stallions have thick manes) and i keep him out 24/7 so weather dries hair and snaps it off .... i use pig oil and flowers of sulphur and find hair serum (cheap stuff from superdrug) works fab ... also silicon furniture polish works, and always use electrical tape to fasten not bands ... but if you want long mane tail, i think the way forward is those strange bags you tie hair into. i also spent fortune on MTG (until realised main ingredient was coaltar and flower of sulphur) now i make my own mixture.

I wonder how or why furniture polish was first used on horses, did someone pick up a can and spray it on by accident then realise it worked? About 15 years ago i did work experience and they washed the horses with dreft handwashing powder and used pledge on the tails, i thought it was really weird at first but soon realised it was cheap effective!

Cowboy magic detangler. Can;t manage without it. Slathered it all over my welshs mane about 10 days ago and combed through. Yesterday (after 10 days of living out) combed through again, only a couple of minor tangles, and no real hair loss.

With tails I tend to wash, cowboy magic and comb out, and if very long and thick, baby oil and plait.
