Those of you with Irish Draughts

Hi Slave2Magic :) I got my gelding at 10 so not really much help but I do know my 5 year old has quite a bit more filling out to do. I would hazard a guess at 7ish?

hello:) Just pondering my youngsters growth. He's 16.2 and 3 in May. I don't think he'll go over 17 hands height wise but I think he has a lot of filling out to do yet.

Mine's only an ID x (but with more ID than anything else, if that makes sense). He is a big boy and I don't think we are quite there yet; height is probably about finished (hope so anyway) but he has filling out still to do. He's 7 in August and is now about 17.1 or 17.2.

mines 7 now, between 5 and 6 there was a massive change.

He looks finished now, but who knows what this year will bring...

Id guess at 7 though.

I have a half ID (the ginge in my pic) - he was 16.1 when i bought him at 3.5 and didn't stop growing (up or out) till 7. Is now a "big" 17 hands.

Dear OP
Don't under-estimate how much he might grow and fill out. If my horse is anything to go by you could end up with a giant. I have an IDx. His previous owner bought him at 4 when he was around 17hh. He is now 6 and currently 18.2hh and has filled out massively (cue having to buy yet another saddle and another set of ever larger rugs). Apparently they don't mature mentally and physically until around 7 or 8 years.
Good luck. I'd invest in a step ladder just in case.

Eeeeeek, my new boy is rising 5 and a 'good' 16.3 now, Im hoping he doesnt grow taller but just fills out!

Mine is 5 and seems so much 'bigger' than when I bought her 14 months ago - she's 3/4 ID. We are on a third saddle as a consequence! Haven't measured her for a while (she was 16h when I got her but I'm sure she's a little bit more now) but don't want her any bigger!

My ID x is now 7. I bought him at 5 and he was so gangly he looked like his head and feet were too big for his body. He hasn't grown much height wise but has gone from a skinny bean to a muscled up chunk. I'm glad I bought an adjustable saddle. He started at MW and is now XW.

I've got bates caprilli for jumping and a wintec isobel for dressage. Been really pleased with them both and saved me a fortune in new saddles

My IDx was 16.2 at 4yrs old, he only grew to 17h in total, which he was at 6, but he kept filling out for another couple of years, and kept going up rug sizes until he was 8/9.

Ours is ID x Connemara (dun in sig) bought at 4, with a passport of 15.1. I would say he's still growing and he's 6 and about 17hh! In the last six months he has changed shape completely (saddle needed altering) he actually has withers now, and his bum isn't the tallest part of him anymore!

Hi S2M. I've got an ID/TB that I've had since he was 5. Definitely a growth spurt between 5 and 6 years of age, growing another two inches in height. He filled out between 7 and 8 yrs old as he started to work properly and muscled-up, going from a razor blade to medium-wide in saddle-fit terminology ! He's 13 now and hasn't changed for the last 3 years so I reckon whatever your ID is by 9/10 is whatever it will be.

As an aside, can I ask which adjustable saddles you all use on your growing youngsters?

Mine is in an xch gfs saddle - saddle number 3. The second I had was an ideal gp and was great but I decided to get the xch gfs rather than adjust the ideal on last fitting, one as it fitted brilliantly and has an adjustable tree. It's v comfy too and she goes well in it.
