Nah a good jump saddle is the way forward or a good GP. I have all mine in either jump or GP saddles for whatever they do (i do low level dressage and foxhunter sj)
A jump saddle and a dressage saddle, but my horse does compete in both disciplines. I find schooling in a jump saddle fine - but jumping in a dressage saddle is impossible. Also, Maggie is absolutely gigantic and hasn't that much engine and I am a stumpy-legged 5'3 so really need all the help I can get to elongate my leg as much as possible on the flat!
I've got both for my current horse (& about 8 other saddles, most of which i don't use but have that 'i'll keep it just in case' theory!)
I tend to jump & hack in my Stubben, then do 'proper dressage schooling' (& tests) in my dressage saddle, i ride quite short for jumping, so if if drop my stirrups down on my stubben, i feel like i'm all over the shop, yet my dressage saddle puts me in a good position, (although i do need to have the saddler out to check it now horse is fitter)
i think its what you're used to, i have a few GP saddles & occasionally school my old pointer in 1, i find i can school on the flat in a GP, but can't get my stirrups short enough to jump,
i've got both and try to have both for each horse once they start competing. Now i'm used to dr saddles I love them and don't like doing flatwork in anything else unless it's a really baby horse.
I originally bought a Bates Momentum as having ridder my friends horses in one it was my first choice for a brilliant jumping saddle that also allowed me to do flat work...
However, a coiuple of months later my Grandmother died and left me some money so I treated myself to a lovely Albion SLK Ultima which I now wouldn't be without.
Although, saying that I do school my friends horses in the Bates Momentum without issues just ride a couple of holes shorter than I would in a dr saddle so my lower leg is stable.
Saying that, I often pop over jumps in my DR saddle with ultra long stirrups to finish off a flat session!
I'm going to be completly different from most people as I only have a dressage saddle...it was a real bargain on ebay and I was very lucky that it fits him really well I borrow a friends jumping saddle as it fits him like a dream and I can't afford to buy another one!
I was always a showjumper who did the odd bit of dressage when I coulde be bothered & I'd always had just one GP saddle 6months ago our tack room got broken into & all the saddles stolen so I decided to replace the GP with a jumping saddle.
I got an Albion Kontrol & I love it! It's v.comfy, fits my horsey well & I love riding in it. It's so much better to jump in than my previous GP. Unfortunatley, I've recently done much less jumping & have started moving over to the dark side. I'm currently competing BD on a regular basis (only Prelim but aiming to move up over time). As a result, I've ended up buying a Wintec dressage saddle. It's cheap & cheerful & fits my horse but I'm not overly keen. It's not the saddles fault, I sat on a friends horse in her Kieffer last week & hated that & I often ride another horse who has a Bates Innova & I hate that too.
I love my jumping saddle & do everything in it. I school in in with my stirrups a hole or two longer than jumping length. The only time I put my dressage saddle on is for lessons & competitions. I feel much more secure in the jump saddle & as my horse is often quite sharp & can throw the odd massive buck (not naughtyness/pain, just overexcited ex-racehorse) I like to feel secure.
I wouldn't be too gutted if I couldn't use my dressage saddle but my trainer would as he thinks I ride much better in it. But if you took my jumping saddle off me I'd probably turn into a screaming brat. For me the jumping saddle is my 'must have'.
i have a GP and a jumping saddle but can do dressage in my jump saddle but would prefer to do it in my GP, and same other way round, can jump in my GP but would rather use my jumping saddle!
I've got three very close contact jump saddles. One is mono flap and A dressage saddle (jeffries) . I would now rather school bareback than ride in the horrid dressage saddle and can get just a good tune out my horses with no saddle as with one (I actually find it easier! ESP on the flat) so dressage saddle is used for shows only. I would like a mono flap dressage saddle as this might make me hate it a bit less. I find once your used to your close contact jump saddles anything else is very hard to ride in, ESP things with a wide twist.
I only have a jump saddle and whilst I can and do dressage school in it I would prefer to have a dressage saddle too as the set up is all wrong for *elegance* The bars are set for shorter stirrups, end of, which is fantastic but it does knock your dressage position somewhat.
Must say this is the one reason I miss my Wow - with the 2 stirrup bar positions if I couldn't be bothered to change the flaps I could school with my jump flaps on as I just needed to move my leathers onto the back bars
i have a jumping and dressage saddle - dressage mainly to help me and my **** position lol oh - and jumping cos she used to jump BIG (green) so i need help there too lol
ok - can i say i can also ride her perfectly well bareback too - i'm not really that **** lol! but the saddles do help a lot for their specific purposes
QR...ihave a jump saddle for V and recently got a DR saddle i already had altered to fit him. i don't really like riding in it though and still school a lot in my jump saddle- it felt wierd at first (had always had 2 saddles before) but now i'm used to it. i only think you'll struggle if you want to really head up the levels with DR as obviously you have a shorter length of leg in a jump (even if you put your pedals down) so can make lateral stuff harder
