...that you didn't breed.

Why did you get another?

Someone I know just bought a 17hh+ coloured ISH. He's got manners to burn, calm as anything, beautiful. I'm seriously jealous. My horse is gorgeous, however, I just feel at 15hh, he's too small for a 5'10 hefty lump like me. I don't think I could sell him, tho, I love him and I'd always worry about him.

So did any of you get another because you just couldn't sell your other one? (No way could I afford it currently :()

I have 2 because I have my own place and horses need companions. They are also different types and I enjoy the change of type. I also like to go for long hacks and only one horse would soon be worn out !

1 mare who cant be ridden due to an injury (only just turned 6), jsut bought a little colt to keep her company but sshh its a secret , i am looking for a loan horse (cant afford to buy anymore lol) for hacking , just dont tell hubby x
you can do it lol x

Its hard to say, my parents think I collect them! I guess I have high hopes that each one will be something great and I do have the problem that once I buy I cant sell, loaning I can do as its not final and they will come home eventually.

I think the biggest thing to me is the company and happiness they give me. I love being surrounded by them and every horse has its own individual character. I guess Im just a right softy!

i got another because he was going for meat and i felt sorry for him. dont think he is gonna make big enough for me to ride tho :( but he is like a lost pup loves me to bits!

Well number 1 is my riding horse. Then I got number 2 because I had the opportunity to buy my dream horse. Because number 2 was a yearling I borrowed number 3 to be a companion for her. I was then given number 3 as her old owner was trying to move abroard and wasn't going to ship an elderly, retired TB across the world. So she accidently came on the lorry with my other two neddies ;) . I then got number 4 because he really needed a good home. I'm too soft.

I've got two and am just putting one out on loan for 6 months. I did that thing of thinking two wouldn't be actually double the money and double the work and double the time. Why I thought this I'm not really sure. I've had some medical issues [hip replacment that has had complications] and have just been put on notice of redundancy so made the [hard] decision to put my boy out on loan.

I guess if you haven't got your own land and they are in livery, it's much more of a big deal having more than one.

The other one that's staying - he's my daughter's pony and it wouldn't matter if I had to live on bread and water but he is never going anywhere!!!

I have 2 (although technically one is my mum's and I get to ride him too!) I could never sell my boy though, I love him too much!

Now I would be jealous too of your friend's 17hh ISH coloured horse, because if I was ever able to get another one - that would be EXACTLY the sort of thing I would be after!

I own one - a 13.2hh part-arab x welsh which i looked after for a few years and couldn't bear to part with - my very expensive pet!

I look after two more - my little 11.2 welsh a which is a toddlers pony (he never rides - i do!)

an 18 month tb colt to go into racing (i am just beginning lunging him at the moment on the trainers orders!)

Maybe getting a 3yr gelding straight from the racecourse?

Firstly got a pony on full loan, had him for about 8 years, we're on the same yard as owner though and she is gradually taking over his running costs for which I am most grateful, we hope we can find another rider for him in the longer term.

Then, when daughter was 16 I bought her first horse 3yo ex racer, she tried very, very, hard but after nearly 4 years had to admit defeat, we advertised the horse ( a mare) lwvtb, got a new home lined up daughter bought next horse (gelding) and then the mare is sent back, so I ended up with 1 loan pony and 2 ex racers.

well, we've always had 2 [ they change] cos my daughter also rode as a child & when she gave up I had two horses instead - after dramatic financial downsizing last year - ended up with just big ruby - but like having more than 1 as i enjoy the care of a teeny tiny herd & enjoy riding different things - so now have a loan pony/horse - so we are back to 2 :)

I have two. When my riding horse Sammi was approaching 16 years of age in 2009, I decided that over the next few years to follow I would want to steady his work load up, and thought it was a good time to buy Rox, who was 9.5 months old at the time. The idea was, as Rox got older, and started work, I would be slowing Sammi right down, and eventually, Rox would take the main role of my riding horse. xx

For the summer I had two.
My own man and then borrowed a semi retired pony from a friend.

If I could I's get something else too, I want to save up and buy a second one for me, something bigger than Alvin and perhaps a bit of a contrast to him too. Also, there's so many going at the moment that look very sweet and in need of a good home (complete wrong mentality there).

My RI put the (ridiculous?) idea of buying a youngster into my head, and then by the time said youngster is grown up, I'd have another few years under my belt and the time to put into a youngster. I like this idea:D

I have my own yard, so I have another to keep the other company. I still have my first pony who is now semi retired but still oodles of fun, and my proper horse for doing proper stuff lol

Number 1 is really my dad's horse. He is a VERY heavy shire x cob and not the most elegant and I really wanted to have a go at competitions. Bought a TB x but we just didn't gel and I felt awful, tried everything, she went for residential training (with me as well!) and the trainer bought her off me in the end. Then we bought our first two foals, one for hubby and one for me. We then bought hubby's filly's sister as she was older and broken to ride. Ended up with the forester in a very roundabout long story but he's great fun to be around. :)

When my mare got to 20, then I knew i couldn't part with her, and wanted to go on competing so enter my second horse :)

Having 2 in livery is expensive, but I wouldn't be without either of them :)

I have two ( I think everyone knows that :p) Nitty to back when she is ready and BH to ride. I didn't mean to have two it just sort of happened. I bought Nits whilst I was already riding BH, couldn't bear to watch him do nothing- such a waste so I rebacked and got him going, and then I took him on loan as his owner was struggling to afford him and then she wanted to sell pretty pronto and so to make sure he didn't go somewhere I didn't approve of I bought him. I think he'll probably be sold if Nits ever starts her ridden career though as I don't want two ridden horses. Will probably wait til she gets going and then buy another two year old to replace BH. I am very fond of him but he isn't really my type and in honesty is a bit wasted with me!

Now I would be jealous too of your friend's 17hh ISH coloured horse, because if I was ever able to get another one - that would be EXACTLY the sort of thing I would be after!

He's what I should have got had I not been so stupidly impulsive. My first horse was 17hh2 and I felt fine on him. I feel like a bit of a fool on a 15hh 'pony'. :o:(

One experienced chap and horse ofca lifetime ... Now helping to train the baby and hopefully future horse of a lifetime.
I would never let him go. And I hope I can keep her forever, too.

I got my 1st pony, a shetland, because my dad drove past a farm every day on his way to a job he was doing and saw a lovely chestnut shetland mare in a field with a few others with long blonde mane and he said he fell in love with her. So my dad being my dad drove into the farm, asked if she was for sale and bought her & brought her home! she was in foal, while she was pregnant we bought a shetland colt to breed with her once he was old enough, along came the foal. then I got Minty my fjord because i fell in love with him at a riding school and obviously wanted something big enough to ride.

I then started looking for a young horse around 2 years old in 2009, my plan was to get a small welshie around 13.2hh that i could break myself and show in-hand and get a small, younger friend to ride it in the showring. i looked the paper one day and saw a 2 year old fjord, above the budget (budget was only about 200, this fjord was 1000) and i've never seen another fjord for sale in scotland at all apart from the one i already had to just HAD to buy him whether i really needed him or not.

little stallion became big enough and bred with my mare so i had another foal. he got the snip afterwards and somehow i've just ended up with 6 ponies

Why did you get another?

Short answer...because I had 50 acres to fill:)

Long answer, the first one I bought came with another one (plus 2 rabbits, and 2 cats:rolleyes::eek:) Then I rescued my Arab who was in foal, then I saw a Paint that I liked the look of.

So did any of you get another because you just couldn't sell your other one?

I buy horses because I can, not because I need them for a particular reason - although I did spend a lot of time tracking down just the right stallion. I still have the Arab and the Paint, one of the originals lives just up the road, the other moved 1500 miles to Saskatchewan and I see her on FB all the time.

I sell horses for many reasons, I breed good horses with the intention of selling them, I am fortunate in that I have the facilities to keep them if they don't sell for a while, and I never, ever, sell to someone that my dogs don't like! My dogs are excellent judges of character, they rarely snarl or guard me, but when they do I listen to them!

Will I keep my personal horses for ever? That depends on circumstances, I'd like to say yes, but you never know what tomorrow will bring - my family comes before my animals, if their needs dictated that I had to give up horses for any reason then so be it.

"Bought my own place and went mental" is pretty much my story. No livery to pay = 5 horses. Having a love affair with everyone of them. All got a home for life despite me already counting the days 'til they go out for summer and they are not even in yet!!

Well it all started 25 years ago when I brought my now 28 year old mare, all was great with one ned till she was put in foal, he's now 20. Decided 5 years ago after buying my own land to buy my dream horse, so off to Spain I went to buy an Andalusian mare, she duly arrived in uk at 9 months old. But by 2.5 years old damaged her shoulder in the field and so was deemed as unridable. She is now 5 and had a beautifull filly foal this year:). Inbetween I have also lost one mini Shetland:( gained two more as his companions, and brought a wonderfull 3/4 tb who's just starting to do more serious work. So from starting with one I now have 7! The moral of this story is don't buy your own land!!! It makes collecting them too easy;)

I have no dogs. :( But the chestnut mare is very good, if she doesn't trust someone, she wont go near them. One man she stayed well away from, he turned out to be (under the sweet-as-pie exterior) very violent. It all came out of the woodwork after his wife left him. :(

I've always had a horse for the last 45 years, so the first one is mine, he's 35 now and my baby. No way I would ever part with him.

Then I bought a 14.1 cob for my daughter, we had many successful years showing with her, she's 21 now and earned a home for life. I have actually started doing a bit with her myself as my lad is now ancient.

Then there is our very large younger replacement for the above cob. I bought her for my daughter but I foot the bills. To be honest when I did this I didn't expect my oldie to be still around, but I'm very happy that he is.

Second one was bought asa 4yo to share with niece when she outgrew her pony. I took over the ride when she was doing exams/at Uni. She developed a really bad allergic reaction to horses over that time (she can't even go near me if I have riding gear on), my other mare was in foal so just kept her as my riding horse (C still owns half of her).

The other two are home-bred.
