just wondered how much lighter they get with age. my new horse was apparently almost black when born and he's now got lighter grey areas etc, how much lighter do they get and at what age do they stop getting lighter??

We have two steel greys, both are 10 now, one is almost white now, he started turning a couple of years back but the other one is still very dark (although is slowly getting lighter) I think they are all different.

A friend had a really dark grey ID as a youngster, he's now about 10 years old & almost white.

The famous Lipitzaner Stallions that the Spanish Riding School use are almost black when born but turn white as they mature.

QR: Sadly they do not stop getting lighter and eventually all will become white with age. Some quicker than others, my greying black was still quite dark at 10 as you can see by the pic, two years later, she was pure white

Mine started off as steel grey with silver mane and tail and after 8 years, he is now a flea bitten grey. I think he will eventually end up as white as snow. He is 16 now.

sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tbh..I think it depends on how dark they were when they were born.

My welshie was rose grey at birth and was dappledby 4 and white by 5

i cant believe the difference in all the pics posted!!!
i'd prob say mine is at 6yr old as dark as your holly at 5!!!

do they start to get dapples then? as holly doesn't look that dappled at 5 but is in 2nd photo!! there is no sign of dapples on mine yet

Paddy's passport says steel grey and now at 9 he is very light dapple grey. As others have said I think they will all eventually turn whiter, it depends on the horse how quick the process is.

i never really thought bout it until he arrived at my yard this week and someone said 'you'll have a white horse soon'. i thought they were taking the pee but obviously not!!!

My boy was black wth white mane and tail when we bought him 6 years later when he was PTS he was dapple grey every coat change he went a shade lighter.

He is much lighter this year, he has more white hairs coming though and he is more black and less brown- the whole of the underside of his mane is white, he is totally white on under his chin and is starting to get little socks starting round his coronet band.

Wish he would stay the colour he is now forever!

Tally was a steel grey dapple at four, now almost white at 13. Actually, very flea bitten, but OH gets very ticked off at that term! Every year he gets lighter, and more flecks - he'll probably be chestnut in a few years!
