those that clip blanket/full not sure whats best!

Right have finally decided that this is ridiculous as I can barely do anything with him and he overheats quite easily so the clippers are coming out this afternoon.

So I am undecided whether to take it all off or blanket clip him. I dont think I should take it all off just becaue it will look better as I dont really show him (the odd worker class but dont have to!) and dont really mind what we look like.

I think atm, I am going to leave legs on as knowing him sweaty legs are likely to turn into sunburnt legs behind I think (would just be typical!)

He wears a fly rug in the day anyway and can easily have a rain sheet on if forecast as kept at my mum's
I suppose advantage of taking it all off is keeping warm might keep his waistline a bit trimmer.

Thoughts? I just think that his bum doesnt sweat so why take it off really ;) :D
 
I fully clipped leaving legs on a few weeks ago. I did need to chuck a lightweight rug on overnight when it turned wet and chilly though, which you probably wouldn't need to do if blanket clipped. You could always blanket clip and see how he goes and then take it off if you decide it's needed, but I prefer to get it all off initially in summer, I only trace clip in winter.
 
Did a full clip last night! Managed to wait until July last year but he is eventing and was struggling in this recent weather. Took off legs as well last year but have left them on this year as despite suncream he did get a little burnt on one pink heel. Got 3/4 of a skip of hair off him :D

I still find it shocking that my TB hasn't fully shifted his coat yet either....his coat went airbrushed-like this time last year, but he's still not fully shifted his coat to that again yet either :/ Rather annoying!
 
I'd go with a full clip for the summer, but if he has white legs leave the legs on to protect against sunburn. Plus then you don't have to worry about those annoying straight lines with a blanket clip. Ecco the above, if it was winter I'd go for a blanket clip.
 
the trouble is coat has shifted... I clipped end of march to avoid the drawn out moulting that occurs but this is it summer coat is here! He is 17 now and it has been getting thicker the last couple of years.

Basically he was out fully clipped in the day in march/april..... he now has more coat than he did then!

unfortunately it is a well pretty colour atm!

and it will be boring and pale underneath!
 
My mare is the hottest horse I have ever had! Never gets cold in winter - gets heat bumps if you put too many rugs on in January in the Pennines while fulyl clipped! I struggled greatly with her eventing due to this, but found the solution was to wash her off before the fast work. I tend to sponge her down even when going out hacking now! I use tea tree or lavander shampoos... I know I don't have the hairy problem with her, but its a suggestion to try...xx
 
I used to have to clip Cairo and Jemima in summer and always did full clips. Easier to bath off, looked neater and they were nice and cool with all the coat off.

If it went wet or cold, I just to chuck a no fill t/o on them to replace the lost coat over the few weeks until it went back to a normal summer coat.

thanks all :) just never actually known a clipped horse in summer but right now he will be stood in field sweating and huffing (it tends to send his breathing a bit funny sometimes not in an RAO way, just a I am way too hot way!)

thanks honey, yes I do have to be careful not to rug him much in winter as he will come out in heat bumps. I have been washing pre and post work atm. The ground is causing me enough problems re his fitness as no arena let alone the fluff :)
 
I'd full clip, as you say it'll help with his weight too. Most of the horses I know that need a summer clip have the lot off, they are more comfortable that way.
