Would you buy it in bulk? Or would you prefer to buy in smaller quantities? How much do you pay for heavy magnesium oxide per kilo? If you're in Kent and use magnesium, please pm me as I have something to ask you.

I like buying in small bags just because it goes such a long way and Id wonder whether it would be any good aft a long time. I get mine from naturalhorsesupplies.com and I think I pay around twelve quid for a 900g bag. They do do a cheaper one but I have a fussy mare so she doesnt eat it.

Probably no more than two bags of the stuff because I literally only feed a tablespoon a day so a bag seems to last forever. I tend to flit about with how much I feed to because if my girl is good on thestones then I tend to not feed it but at certain times of the year i feed everyday. Im not sure if there is a sell by date on it. Are you able to get lots of it for a good price? If thats the case then I might be tempted.

Yes, I have a large amount that I use (comes in 25kg bags), but have managed to tear some of the sacks by accident. Only small holes, but looking to pack down into smaller quantities and just trying to work out what to pack it down into and how much to sell it for. Looking about it sells for over £10 per kilo, but that seems a lot! It is pharmaceutical grade magnesium oxide heavy.

25 kilos at a time!

It doesn't go off, it's a stable mineral, not an unstable explosive or organic. Keep it dry and it's absolutely fine. Damp and it turns to rock :D

No that would be a good price I would say! As long as you can prove the strength of it then Id do it (maybe keep the big bag with details on it, dont know?). What a bummer though regarding trhe bag!

Not just the one bag....

I just don't fancy the work of weighing it all out - fluffy white powders are not fun! Nor do I have a certificate of conformity to photocopy. The bags are labelled up, but no separate cert to provide for people.

It's all dry and still within the bags, and I've now wrapped each sack in plastic wrap so is watertight and not spilling everywhere, but made me realise I have a bit too much! A good few years per horse in each sack!

Would people be willing to buy a whole bag at a time? To save me to work of splitting it down? Or is it far too much? And at £10 per kilo that is £250 per bag - seems insanely expensive to me!

For comparison Equimins sells for between £9.75 for 1 kilo to £41 for 5kg.

I buy in bulk with a friend and getting a 20kg sack works out at 6.40 a kilo. That is Pharmaceutical grade magox light.

That is light grade, I have heavy. Wonder what their price for that is....

Equimins just list it as Magox but it is the light as I've ordered it before their prices went up. They do that or magnesium carbonate.

For the bulk supplier you would have to ring Taycrest and get a quote. I think they did both but when I ordered before one of the people I was splitting with had a horse who would only eat the light so I focused on that.

Both are 98% pure at least.

Equimins only stock heavy and lowest price per kilo is £8.25. Think I might just offer whole sacks at a good price and see if they sell. They can sit there if not! But where on earth would you advertise such a thing? Not the sort of thing people sell on preloved!

Heavy is the purest, but the main advantage is that it is much more dense therefore easier to handle as it is not so fluffy and you give a smaller volume

Might ask them for an updated price list as mine is from June, sounds like they have made some changes on prices and products.

Think I last ordered from Equimins at the beginning of the year and it was definitely the light they sent. As you say very fluffy, I ended up covered when I split the sack. I stopped using them as they went from £30 for 5kg to over £40 and starting buying in bulk

Heavy is slightly purer but if you are talking about the difference between 98.5 % or 99.5% it's tiny and some argue that the finer powder is better absorbed.

Personally I would buy either at the right price as my horse isn't fussy and will eat both. Would be interested in yours if you were nearer.

Try on the barefoot forums, they'll let you advertise which H & H won't and you'll get more people giving you feedback on what they are paying.

I've been buying magnesium oxide from natural horse supplies, what is the difference between this and calmag? Does it have the same effect?

Same effect, but cal mag is between 50 and 80% magnesium so you need to feed a lot more and some horses don't like the taste

I buy calmag, does exactly the same job just isn't as refined and so doesn't taste particularly nice apparently, although I've never had a problem feeding it. I pay about £17 for 25kgs but that's only because the shop has to order it in specially.

I've been told the quantity you feed is the same whether it's heavy or light, since the percentage given is the percentage of magnesium oxide not the percentage magnesium if you see what I mean.

I won't be changing away from calmag, it does the job and is much much cheaper than the white powder versions. Although I'd suggest trying your horse on it before you buy a big bag if you can, just in case they don't eat it. I can send some to you if you want to try it Emilynuttall?

You feed the same by weight but because the light is less dense more by volume it's a bigger scoop. So the heavy looks like less but weighs the same.

I bought 4 kg bag, cost £5 or so, lasted a few months, I store in a big airtight container

K... Checked invoice and I'm talking out of my bum! It was £4 a kilo! Sorry. I think I'm lying to myself about what ponies cost! But it does work out at about 7p a day which is not bad
