My vet has sent me some Gastroguard and Sucralfate today. When scoped he saw 2 small ulcers on the scope (Grade 1) he didn't think it was enough for any symptoms but we are going to treat and see if it helps.

Gastrogard he said doesn't matter if its fed on an empty stomach or not, but looking online its better on a empty stomach? The Sucraflate needs to be on a empty stomach.. thinking the following.

Morning:
7.30am Gastrogard (as will of ran out of hay for a couple of hours)
8am Sucraflate syringed
Turnout after?

Evening:
5pm Sucraflate
5.30pm(?) Evening feed with supplements in (How long should i wait for feeding after the Sucraflate?)

BUT if I'm riding after the Gastrogard or Sucraflate I'm riding her on a empty stomach.. Is this ok? She usually always gets chaff before ridden.

Thank you in advance helpful H&Hers!

I wasn’t riding mine when he had ulcers as his were quite bad but you definitely can’t feed the two together. I had my YO give the gastroguard for me and I went up an hour later to give the sulfracate. It was a right pain. But I would definitely give the gastroguard on an empty tum to give it a better chance of working. Mine was living out 24/7 so he never completely had an empty tum.

He had the sucralfate in his feed

Did he have the sucralfate in a feed on an empty stomach?

Apparently the sucralfate can ‘stop’ supplements from being absorbed so it’s recommended waiting half an hour/to a hour after until feeding any feed or supplements.

Saying that maybe I could syringe sucralfate and give 2 handfuls of chaff so I can ride.

Not that I recall. He had it in his feed but had to be sprinkled on top, not mixed in.
I still find it odd that different vets give different instructions.

I had to give Peptizole ( omeprazole )same as Gastroguard, an hour before feed.on an empty stomach. The Sucralfate in the feed twice daily, so not on an empty stomach. This was with two different horses on separate occasions.
Your vet seems to be telling you the other way round? I would check with them as it sounds a bit odd to me.

Have Whatsapped my vet so will wait for him to confirm. Sounds very different to others!

I know it is really frustrating when your horse has ulcers, you just want to ride and you have to exercise such patience. (I know from bitter experience).

The advice to get a vet is good, but one thing you could do is learn about ‘massage’ techniques while you can’t ride, this will help you guys bond, may lead to you understanding where your horse has issues and what is ‘normal’ for your horse and unless you take it to extremes unlikely to do any harm.

There is masses of free stuff on line, but if you are interested, The Masterson Method’ is a good place to start.

I am guessing the ulcers are squamous (not glandular) if you are using gastroguard? If so they are the stress ulcers and some management/pain cause which is worth reading up on.

I used gastroguard and sucralfate. My horse was living out at the time. I can't recall exactly how it was given but yes remember it being a bit tricky working out ways to get it all correct and not be standing waiting for ages inbetween etc.
I fenced off a little pen and stood the horse in it so he had little grass and was alone and able to wait between feeds, I think i put the sucralfate in handful of chaff in a feed scoop and fed it before his feed later. Its a pita!

At my work they are just given it all at any old time and to be honest it appears to work as well!

There seems to be alot of differing advice given. My vet said to give gastroguard/peptizole first thing in the morning even if hay hadn't run out which was not a good idea anyway. Wait for 30mins then feed and turn out. Sucralfate didn't need anything special just to add.in to his feed.

Vet has told me to continue to ride, just make sure she is fed a good 2 handfuls of chaff before work. I think if they were a higher grade it might be different, my previous horse years ago with grade 4 ulcers had a month off.
