but those who have mares due to foal this year, what are you wanting/hoping to get? colt or filly? and why?

I have a dutch gold mare due on 7th march, I'd love a filly as having my colts bits chopped off was traumatic and I left it late which is why we are expecting a foal in March!!!!!!!!!!!

wooops comes to mind.

yes i think thats one reason I was wanting a filly last year - i got one so havent had any problems arranging castration!!! thank god for that.

I don't mind having a colt or filly just filly is preferable, my colt who is going to be a dad soon!!!!!!!!!!! is gorgeous although we left him entire to see if he would develop more but was obviously busy sh*****g whilst no one was looking so it didn't work, now he has been cut he's growing up slightly.

of course theyve got to be healthy thats the main thing but it would be nice if it was what you really wanted though...
you dont want to take it further and say have a palomino filly??
grin.gif

all i said to Ebi through her pregnancy was I wanted a black filly

. If it hadnt been a filly then it would certainly of had a complex!!!

Oh he was developing all right! Don't think i've got any chance of having a palamino as he is black and the mare is dark bay! I'd love a Chestnut filly just like Shires Typhoon

Twiggy is due mid April to a coloured. It'a her first so as long as they are both healthy couldn't really give a wotsit - though, all things going to plan, would prefer a filly - bet it'll be a colt though just to spite me!

I am really mixed about what I am hoping for with Cloud. She is due on the 7th April and I would love for her to have a filly, however because we have our stallion here it would actually make life a heck of a lot easier if it was a colt.

What I mean is, she doesn't say that the colt is the son of the mare. She just said that it was a colt belonging to her, making no reference to whom it's sire or dam is. Didn't she? God you have me confused now too, LOL!!

Not necasserily.......A group of mares may have been turned ot together with their foals and the colt (maybe the only colt so they know it is him) may have gotten one of the other mares pregnant. She does not say it was his mother - although it may have been!

ETA: If it is the colts mother who is in foal to him then it is funny that she is having her child and grand-child!

Ohh yep sorry just caught up!!! I just assumed that the colt was the mares foal, but now see that this is not necessarily so. However this is exactly what happened in the field next to my old livery yard (poor mare).

Yep I knew of a couple of mares who had foals by their sons.....not pretty! The offspring were seriously disturbed.

Disturbed in what way? Did they look normal?
I find that so odd - on my mare's pedigree she has the same great great great grand parent appear twice, once on each side and I always thought even that was a bit odd!!!!

What your horse has is a very loose version of Line Breeding (quite common actually), what the horses I knew had was InBreeding - quite different as it is incest.

One of the horses I knew of, was very small, sort of looked like it had dwarfism or something similar. It had some genetic issues going on with it's legs and as I recall it used to develop colic over-frequently. I don't remember what it died of but it was only about 4 years old when it died.

Aww, that is horrible!!

This is a bit of a tangent but I got two rabbits from the pet shop years ago and they were sold as sisters. Of course they turned out to be brother and sister but we didn't know untill we found the babies in the hutch!! The parents were only about 4 months old when they had them

Anyway the boy went off to be castrated and when the babies were old enough we gave them away to friends and we kept the original two. There were 8 babies and every single one looked normal and acted normal but they all died by the time they were 2. The mum lived to 8 and the dad is still alive at 9.
By the way, all the people we gave them to knew they were in-bred!!!

Seems to be a theme with incestuous relationships in the animal kingdom. The normal lifespan and growth of them does seem to be interrupted.

I dont really mind what I get, as long as its nice, straight and healthy.
In some ways id like a replica of her because she is the toughest mare I have ever known. If it is a filly, Ive already had an offer for her - but dont know if id advise the owners to sell!
