those who give lifts to friends in their transport...

If I had to go out of my way significantly, ad assuming we're not talking about someone whose helped me out loads etc, then I'd expect them to cover the whole cost of the out of the way part of the journey, and then half the rest of the fuel. I often give people on the yard lifts without charging fuel if we're only going a short distance because they help me out in other ways. I think you're being pretty nice doing 34 miles out of the way, I wouldn't!

I work out approx how much trip has cost in fuel, then divide by number of horses on lorry. So for example, if I take 3 of mine and 2 for friends on a trip to stay away show, fuel cost £150, then I'd ask them for £30 each, so I'm paying 3/5 and friends 1/5 each. Always grateful when they generally give me a bit extra as the running costs on big 6 horse truck are huge!

I am happy to take people if I am going anyway for diesel costs. There are a couple of people who I would take places even if I weren't going though I would want generous diesel cover. I also will loan my lorry to a select few and expect them to put diesel on it.
I cover my diesel costs but that's about it. For example took x 2 people XC schooling Saturday, had one of my own on the box, diesel would have cost approx £10 - £15, if that and they each paid a fiver.
I refuse to be completely cynical about people, I don't find everyone takes advantage, I like the company, contributions to costs are welcome and I like to help people out who may not have transport of their own.

Do you work it out as 25mpg?
I know it uses more fuel with more horses but how do you work it out? 50p per mile per horse?
:) I also like the company and its safer to have someone else with you too :)

I just look at the fuel gauge before I leave, I know the truck costs about £130 to fill, so every quarter of a tank costs about £32 so I split it between us. If we use half a tank I generally ask for £30 from them because that's about half the cost of fuel. I've never yet had anyone not give me fuel costs or not clean it out, and I even lent it to Peter Atkins to take Henny to Lumuhlen in, I'm not precious about it, even though its a smart enough box!

I've never actually worked out what mine does to the gallon but the 50p a mile seems to cover it and my friends know what to expect before they ask so theres no awkwardness. Incidently I work the mileage out from where the box is kept round trip so if youre going out of the way to pick them up youre covered. :)

My friend has a 4x4 but can't afford a trailer, I have a trailer but can't drive so she tows me and her ponio and she just charges me mileage (and I buy her a burger at the show :D )

^^^
This is brilliant!
Very eccentric of you to have a trailer when you cant drive :D Burgers a nice touch too :D :D

I pay whatever contribution is required, there is normally 3 horses in the lorry so makes it cheaper. I usually pay between £5.00-£15.00 towards fuel.

At our yard we charge £20 for an hours travel (one of the liveries who has a trailer and a tow car but doesn't compete started this and the rest of us just copied it). I share my trailer with a friend but only I have a tow car so we split the diesel cost half and half which suits me fine as I like having someone to go places with and if I didn't tow her horse she wouldn't have a trailer and I couldn't afford such a nice one on my own :)

If they were my "Pal" or my friend I wouldn't charge anything. I am not comfortable making money out of my friends. I would rather exchange favours when I needed something.

We have a 3 horse lorry and often take my best friend with us - she does contribute towards diesel, we're not 'making money' out of her, she just contributes towards the fuel costs, and is very grateful to be able to come along as she doesn't have her own transport. Our lorry cost us an awful lot to buy, and costs a fair bit to run - be nice if we could find someone to take us everywhere for free so we didn't have to pay! Whatever friends contribute, it still saves them an absolute fortune on hiring or buying their own transport.

In exactly the same way, it costs a lot to keep horses and I don't let friends come and ride them for free either!

I used to do favours such as mucking out, poopicking, tack cleaning etc. and once at the venue mum used to buy food/bring picnic. If we were going a long way we might pay, or if asked we would pay, however if someone was going to the show on their own anyway an extra pair of hands and less chores that week seemed to suffice :)
