i spoke to the vet this mornig when he was at our yard over the concerns i had with my horse having gastric ulcars. i am with nfu, so if i claimed for an endoscope and if its confirms he has them and i claim for the gastra guard, what is then excluded from my insurance, my friend said it may exclude the whole area which could include colic, i havnt yet decided wether to have him scoped, he has offered to treat him an if his behaviour changes it has made the diagnoses but we would quite like to know the extent of the ulcars if he has them.

When i claimed the whole area was excluded... however, i was with E&L at the time (say no more about that one).

I would give your insurance a call and see what they say but i think that they would exclude.

I was glad i had her scoped tho as she had frade 4/5 ulcers and needed a lot of treatment. However, she did make a great recovery.

NFU no longer make specific exclusions like this any more. If you look at your policy it will have a statement saying that any prexisiting condition is no longer covered. Basically once you renew your policy after his treatment has finished they will not pay out for further ulcer treatment - unless he is still receiving treatment at the time of renewal.

I do not know what treatment your vet is offering but my horse had to have Gastroguard which costs about £24 per day for a big horse. Worth asking him!!!

yes he said that the gastro gaurd would cost me about £25 a day which i can claim on the insurance for. he said i can either try the gastro guard and see what happens or have him scoped to see the extent,i have a few supplements to try first to help with his stomach acid and see what happens then decide wether to hve him scoped.

I did have Winston scoped as the first step to pin down a mystery illness, really to rule them out. However he had quite bad ulcers and clearly had had them for a while. The interesting thing was where they were. There are two areas to the horse stomach 80% of horses have them in the top (squamous) section of the stomach. Winston was in the 20% and had them in the glandular region where the stomach acid is produced and must have been in considerable discomfort. There are only two causes for ulcers in that region - stress and long term bute use. He has never taken bute only on a short term basis and then only twice so it had to be stress. I moved yards and he has not had then since.

Sorry if I am telling my grandmother to suck eggs!!!!

I feel it was well worth the scoping to find all this out and a resolution to the problem in the long term.

Hope your chap improves soon - the difference on gastrogaurd can be very quick.
