Gelded at ten months as we had a small yard - two mares, one gelding and one colt. When one had to be kept in and the mares were in season the dynamics got a bit complicated, plus I have no use for an entire, so off they came
He's not changed a bit lol. Still a cheeky but totally handleable chappy (now just one year old)
my rising four was cut a year ago, never really bothered about the ladies, some times regret cutting him as he was so easy when he was a colt! (mad i know) and i have a 2 year old colt, who i wont have cut until both the balls have dropped, dont want no rigs, dont want no complications, and nature is taking its time with him, but he isnt really fussed again about mares in season or not.
But i did notice a change in my eldest one, hes bolshy and grumpy now, where as he was quite a chilled out cuddle monster who was more happy at grass or in the stable then loL! depends on the pony! x
12 months, a real feral, bolshy sod before, lovely after (of course some of the attitude adjustment was just that he was now handled and learnt boundaries).
2.5 years, lovely before, bit of a knob after, lol. (circs are, he was pretty poor when I got him, (waited till he picked up to have them off), so very quiet and as an adult thinks quite a lot of himself).
I'd watch the two year old Walkers_Dream, my lad never dropped the other and never would have because it failed to develop past a squashed up prune size near his kidneys, he had to have a rig op at 2 and a half. He behaved the same as yours, no interest in the ladies, possibly due to this not being fully developed.
2yo still entire, going for futurity this aug- will likely dictate whether he gets the chop or not at 3.
Hes quiet enough but big and leading him he does get a little excited when he forgets himself, but knows hes been bad as turns into a giraffe and stands stock still lol
mines covered at 2 + 3, gelded at 3 when i bought him.
kept his coltish behaviour (striking out/biting/ looking at mares/trying to mount me!) for about a yearish, got in with my mare as a 5yo and vovrred her eeeek!! and now at 6 is a lovely laid back boy - however i do keep him away from mares just in case!
anyway to answrr ur question gelded as didnt want a stallion and behavoour has changed but that could be down to lots of proper handling, i think his old owner let him do what he wanted!!
My first ever colt was gelded at two. The vet saw him at 12 months and advised leaving him to get a bit more shape as he was gorgeous. I've since heard it doesn't make any difference. The jury is still out so far as I am concerned.
We get them cut when they start being a nuisance which is when they start nipping and showing mild aggression at around 12 months. But the last two have been running with the stallion and a gelding which is meant to teach hem manners. I can only say the experts seem to be right on that one as both these colts are well behaved! But they'll probably come off in the autumn. The obvious thing is to check that they are there before deciding!
Mine was gelded at 5 and used for breeding until this time. He sired quite a lot of foals. I got him aged 6 and he's now 8. He is interested in the mares, but then so are a few other geldings at our yard - most of whom were gelded when much younger. Mine did have something of a stallion attitude - personal space, quite standoffish, but also brave out riding and extremely possessive of me after having him 3 days. After 21 months of ownership and a lot of patience, he is like a little lamb.
