My boy has damaged his superficial digital tendon and yesterday underwent PRP treatment.

Im just wandering what was the routine post treatment??

My vet has suggested 1 week box rest 2 weeks 2x 10 min walk out increasing this by 5 mins every 2 weeks and back for a rescan in 6 weeks... Does this sound about right??

Ive never had a horse whos had this treatment before so have no idea what to expect... Any stories good or bad will be appreciated

Thanks

Never heard of PRP treatment but your usual tendon program is 3 months in a box, 3 months of gradual walking work then 3 months turnout before bringing slowly back into work.

We followed a rehab programme similar to that used in stem cell therapy when one of my boys had prp injections.

1 week box rest then 10 mins walking from week 2.
Up to 20 minutes by week 4 and then increase by 5 minutes every 2 weeks until up to 40 minutes walking.
Re-scan at 12 weeks before introducing trot work if all ok.

My old boy did a hind sdft - he was 21 when he did it and the vet correctly said that he would probably never jump again (he doesn't have the power to push up off the ground anymore). Other than that, he's come back just as strong as he was before - I have noticed that he's lost a bit of strength in that back leg but it's barely noticeable unless you know what he was like before the injury.

Thanks blood magik!! How long in total was ur boy off for?? I know its different for each horse im just trying to get a rough idea!! Mines 5 and hes done a front leg im hoping in time he will come right to do what i brought him for which was eventing but i guess only time will tell its absolutly gutting but hopefully he will take ok to box rest and not prat about!! Did u put urs on any supplements at all? Thanks again :)

We did 32 weeks in walk and trot before he had a final scan so 35 in total. After the third scan the vet said I was fine to carry on and to just introduce the canter slowly.

I ended up doing restricted turnout with Jerry and then he went on to live out once we were further into the rehab program.
He was on superflex before he injured himself. I've recently started him on something called Flexadin, which the vet has recommended. We're only just over the loading period so I don't know if it's been worth changing just yet.

Thanks thats helped i nipped home at lunch to check on him and can safely say he does not like being left in!!! Hes trashed the joint! Its guna be a long couple of months :(

It can be very disheartening. I did lots of walking out in-hand and we did some ground work and some poles to keep things interesting for him. Once we were up to 20 minutes walking, I hopped on and we went out for short hacks.
He had toys in his stable but he really wasn't interested in them so I spent ages grooming him and just fussing over him in general.

I had to ask the vet for restricted turnout so I don't know if that could be an option for you a bit further down the line.

Good luck - I hope your boy comes right. :smile3:
