Those who hire horseboxes or use transporters...

What swings it for you?

I would go for a professional with a quality, robustly built lorry. I would go by personal recommendation, or failing that membership of a professional body. I expect the transporter to have a good deal of expertise in handling horses, especially difficult ones.

I would not travel mine in a 3.5t, don't trust them. I wouldn't hire a trailer and driver.

I used this guy when I needed to travel 3 horses together, he is great. He had his lorry designed to his own specifications. He charged £2 a mile for a c100 mile trip two years ago (the mileage count starts and finishes at his base).

The safety of my horses outweigh any cost considerations.

Recommendation first and then price. I payed £750 to ship Rio from Spain and they weren't the cheapest by far but they had good recommendations and the cheaper ones I looked at had a few horror stories to go with their cheap price and I wasn't prepared to take the risk.

The build of the lorry comes into it too, I wouldn't stick them in something that didn't look safe or had a lot of wear and also the experience of the handlers especially in difficult situations or when a horse is being difficult.

Have used a few, to begin with it was about availability as they book up quickly and now I use one as I feel she understands me and my horse, has all the time in the world and is helpful. Also my horse likes her box whereas others he hasn't which makes loading a bit tricky (he is the perfect traveller!)

Recommendation but also the size of lorry and how it is built

I would not use a trailer or a baked bean tin for 2 either box

Got to be HGV!!
