Those who own Golden Oldies .... how much did you pay for them ...

We bought a Welsh D x Appaloosa mare aged about 17 at the time for £100. OH didn't ride her (she was so nappy!), we bred her to a Section D to get a replacement riding horse for me for when my cob finally retires. Risky produced Ellie, cost to breed was about £300, Risky sadly had to be PTS after being kicked in the summer of last year. So we had Risky for two and half years, £40 per year, but she gave us a priceless filly!
 
Holly was £2000 as a been there done a bit 8 year old. I was 12 and did everything I could have done with her - PC, hunting, ODE's, fun hacks, polo, even dressage festivals and 3 counties showing (getting a lovely red rossie!). She gave me my confidence back after a horrid rearing first pony. Best £2000 I (cough...well my dad and funds from rearing pony and me) ever spent. She'll be with me forever. Now 23 and happy bullying youngsters in the field, although she'd still do a good dressage if needed!. Love Holly Bean pony forvever xx

I could never put a price on her, she taught both me and my daughter to ride and was the best thing i have ever been given.

I have only had him a short while though but i really wished i got him when he was younger,he is that nice! fab little horse and i bet in his day he was even more stunning than he is now,he did high level dressage up until he was 10 and you can tell when you ride him,pleasure to ride and he floats! I am hoping to do some veteran classes with him.

Just for the ataxia thing, its like wobblers syndrome, a nerological condition where the back legs basically dont always do what the brain tells it and can be quite dangerous for obvious reasons! So often means horses have to be retired/semi retired if its not too serious, old horse had it (didnt know and sold him, he passed a 5 stage vetting and new owner found out through an MRI

Funny you should mention about Ataxia though, as Motor does strange things with his back legs, and the Vet said it was a form of Stringhalt and prescribed him one Danilon a day. At the same time I had someone come to look at his muscles, and she did some work on him and this helped tremendously.

I asked the Vet if he could come off the Danilon, however she said no, as he needs it for any Neurological pain he may be suffering

I bought my 28 year old appy mare 20 years ago for £1200 from someone on our yard. She came with absolutely everything including a brand new saddle, as owner was giving up. Worth every penny.
 
we bought charlie 13 years ago as a 6 year old for £2000. he has been worth his weight in gold and we have been offered a lot more during his competing years but would never sell him.

my friend has an arab she bought for £500 25 years ago from a riding school when the mare was 18 !!! and she is still going strong at 43 although she has been in retirement for a good few years !!!!

I still have my very first 13.2hh pony and the companion shetland who came with him. Bought him as a 5yo (companion was 3) and they are now 21 and 18. I believe my parents bought him for £1,000 which I think was quite pricey at the time as he was a green 5yo broken to ride and drive. The shetland we got for £100.
