How did you get it? Advert, word of mouth? Land to rent is supposed to be difficult to come by and have already tried local council. Very frustrating to be surrounded by fields yet unable to get my mitts on any of it!

I was lucky .I had evrything stolen from where I kept my horse including trailer.I was worried they would steal my horse ,a friend said a man down her lane was having problems looking after his horses because his wife had died.I went to see him ,I had a horse and pony, he said if I looked after his horses I could keep mine there free and gave me a months trial.12 years later his last horse died and he sold me the land for what he paid for it 20 years before ,as a thank you.
There are some lovely people in this world

Our next door neighbour has a large amount of land that he has split up into smaller fields with blocks of stables that he individually rents out. He advertises in local tack shops and on a board outside the land.

Wow you were lucky, a friend of mine keeps both hers rent free courtesy of a very famous chocolate manufacturer. Oh to be in right place right time! Quite happy to pay tho just want to be secure and do it my way

Yes but it has its downside. We have no one to do our horses so have to go there twice a day everyday and everything is so expensive even the rates I have to pay,yes for 5 stables in a field ,I have to pay rates but not allowed to run a business

I answered an ad in a local paper for mine. It is very hard to get land round me so i guess i was just lucky!

Try asking farmers too, they might have some land they would rent you.

Good luck

I asked the farmer who I knew owned the land and did not do much with it other than put gypsie's horses on it from time to time. It took some persuading as I was 'new to the area' and he wanted lot's of rent per year for it too! Eventually we settled on an agreeable price and made a contract. Do not know what I would do without it now as he has let me put up a mobile field stable too.

i had my own rented yard for a year it was the worst thing i ever did but was my dream. i had 9 boxes school etc, i have 2 horses and took in liveries.to pay the rent. i was paying £26.66 per box and renting them for £30 and the liveries expected my time 24/7. they were all diy, bounced cheques on me, never turned up at a sensible time, left lights on, one horse kept breaking all the fencing that i had only just put up. and moaning to me about the other liveries all the time. i am so glad i gave it up it took over my life and made me ill with worry. having said that my dream know is to have them at home and maybe 1 or 2 friends horses as liveries who only visit once a week. LOL

Parents owned it, house was surrounded by 20 acres, we built the stable yard literally right outside the back door. Sheer complete and utter bliss. If we went away, the horses went to my trainers on full livery as they did every winter from Jan to March while I was at school and they were in full work.

Its nly now, when I do a 15 mile round trip to a livery yard that I realise just how lucky and spoilt I was!

A friend was renting the fields (one from local council and one from Southern Water), When she gave them up I had to tender for them and the price went up by 50%!!! Although, as someone else says, you have do all the work (fencing etc) yourself, it is lovely being able to do what you like but I have no-one to help me so have to go and do the horses twice a day regardless of being ill etc. The downside is that Southern Water have decided to sell their field and there's no way I could afford to buy it so I shall be looking for winter grazing next winter as the council field is only a 10 month lease (have to be off it December and January).

The council keep a mailing list of people interested in renting grazing - perhaps your local council does the same?

I rent a field and two stables.
I just went and knocked on their door.
I know how you feel though, as we've been looking to try and find a bigger field to rent jnu recently. I find a field that looks as if it would do the job, track down the owners by asking anyone I can think of, and then sending a nice letter - Have to say though it hasn't worked yet still looking for that lovely large field

I managed to get a five acre field and three new stables from a local farmer. It was local knowledge and word of mouth. I had lived in the area six years and passed the place every day until I found out about it. It looked as though it was attached to a house and always had horses in it, so I never enquired, a random conversation brought it to my attention.

I got my original place by simply knocking on the door and asking the owners if I could keep my pony with their daughters ones. They said yes The daughter gave up riding after a year and sold her ponies so I ended up having 3 of my own and staying there for 12 yrs.

Current places: I needed somewhere to park my lorry and a friend of Dad's suggested this place. I never saw the owner as I just used to put the money through the door, and then one day he came out and said if I ever needed any grazing for my neds I could bring them here. When the owner of the above place sold up I moved to the place my lorry was parked out. Rather large expense in replacing his old sheds with stables but he did the fencing.

Also have a few acres at a farm. Got that because the bloke who owns it used to be into walking and cycling and I used to meet him miles from home when I was riding, and just used to chat to him.

One day he said he'd got a paddock for rent and did I know anyone who'd want it. Said, yes, ME! Have rented this place for about 3yrs and 8yrs for the place with the stables and swap the ponies between the two places depending on grazing available.

Thanks for these guys. I think I might place an ad in the local village pub. It's full of horsey/farming folk and they have a little ad board just inside the door.

I was offered 12 acres a little while back and he was agreeable for a mobile shelter, trouble is I'd need one more person to share and help me out as well as keep whichever one I'm not doing something with, company. Still worth keeping im mind tho.
