How do you go about finding it? We are looking to move to the Nottingham area next year, pretty much as soon as son finishes school. I currently have 3 horses on livery at the moment, but would really like to rent my own land when we move and do my own thing.

Check local feed merchants and saddlers as it is often on their notice board or find a grass field find the farmer and ask as they sometimes have something even if it isnt the one you see

I wanted the land and stables behind my house (simply because we heard that motorbike scramblers wanted to rent it!) so i door knocked until i found someone who knew the landowner.

So my tip would be spiral out from your houseand find a field then the owner. Look on google maps to see if you can find any houses with outbuildings separated by a reasonable margin (people are more likely to rent if the area is away from the house) look for part of a larger plot of land that is awkwardly shaped or sited - for example a field near me was rented out by a farmer purely because it took a disproportionate amount of time to maintain due to its shape, access and boundaries

So my field and the neighbours were saved from the scramblers and became an accidental smallholding much to the amusememt of the locals, we 'urban farmers' have done ok though lol

Word of mouth. We told anyone and everyone who'd listen we were after some land privately and now have about 3.5 acres maybe more which we rent very cheaply and not too far from home. It would never have been advertised so if someone who knew someone hadn't put our names forward id still be looking!

Thankyou. We are in Essex at the moment, but mum and dad are in notts. Will get them to start having a look about, feed shops etc, and when we are up there visitingwe can start making some enquiries.

I wrote to local farmers and estate owners. It wasn't immediate as am in cattle/sheep country and most farmers are not keen on grazing horses year round. Also met lovely horsey local who told everyone I wasn't barking. Now have two fields in addition to my own so I can rotate.

eta Gumtree and Preloved can be worth a shot. I did get offers of grazing through them, just not close enough to my house.

I stuck a note in the mailbox of the place I rent, introducing myself and telling him about the horses, and he rang me back and said he'd be delighted to have us!

Thanks for the replies. Had looked a little on preloved, hadn't thought of gumtree. Notes through doors/on gates sounds like a good idea too if I can't find owners.

I would recommend leaving notes, knocking on doors etc of those nearby.

I rent the field that backs on to my garden which I found this way. I pay £50 a month for it :))

Only downside is I get woken up by neighing if I dare to sleep beyond 7am!!
