I'm about to order wood pellet bedding to try as shavings as just getting too costly for us.

I had looked at verdo pellets but I'm confused. What is the difference between their norma wood pellets and the horse bedding ones? Apart form the bags being 15kg for horse ones and 10kg for wood fuel I'm struggling to see any difference?

Thanks

it ill just be size and VAT, I personally hated Verdo bedding, couldn't wait to get through the pallet and used loads every week. my preference is 1. Five Star (though have to be ordered through Eden at the minute) 2.liverpool wood pellets (though heard delivery is sometimes hit and miss) and 3. Verdo (but would never use again unless dropped at my place free and even then I'd try and swap them for 1/2 a pallet of something else!!
just my experience and I've not tried other ,makes except these 3.

I didn't get on with verdo. If you look at my started threads in my profile, there's a long thread on there about wood pellets as I did research of major branded pellets.

Five star turned out to be by far the best, but the owner died earlier this year. He got the pellets from a company called Eden though and I will be ordering from them when I need to again :-)

I use miscanthus pellets rather than wood pellets - you don't need to soak them, and they are lighter (so you get more per kg) and more absorbent than wood pellets. Wouldn't go back to wood pellets now.

Oh, don't go for Verdo, they've proven to be rubbish more than once. They're also darn expensive at £290 per pallet.

There are a number of suppliers that a re cheaper including delivery

Corley Biowood (my personal favourite)
Liverpool Wood Pellets
Woof (as recommended by jrp204)
Give Eden a call, they may be cheaper as well

Liverpool Wood Pellets (my favourite plus the cheapest)
Corley Biowood (only live 20 mins away & they are the most expensive ones out the lot???)
Woof (never tried but heard ok reports about them)

But more than twice the price according to that link??

Twice the price? - I don't think so, In fact they are cheaper !!!!!

The cheapest wood pellets I can find are Liverpool which come in at £292 with 5% fuel vat. If I calculate the vat at 20% for bedding purposes they come in at £333

Miscanthus Pellets are £325 for the same quantity, which includes 20% Vat.

So in fact they actually work out cheaper than wood pellets. Plus I get the added benefits that:

  1. They adsorb twice as much moisture
  2. They don't contain the phenols which are in wood
  3. they are treated with a long lasting disinfectant

Try Five Star Bedding, £252 for 67 x 15kg bags. www.edenhorsebedding.co.uk

My bad...I saw the £8 a bag but not that that was for a trial order!

Brilliant thankyou! That's not the site ive looked at previously? Is it new? The one id tried had no order info or pricing. Id tried and failed to contact them but this is definitely the ones im going for this winter.

Corley was my second choice and tbh a pallet with 5% vat is the same price as LWP give or take literally a couple of pound. I too HATE verdo, Which is unfortunate as my partner gets really good deals on Countrywide fuels and they have started stocking it, but as someone else has said I don't think id use it again for free and I also tried desperately to get rid of the damn stuff.

those who are using the eden pellets, which ones are which? the premium ones are 252/pallet load, are these the same as the five star premium?

need to place order this week and would have normally gone with corley biowood but thought i would try these ones as they are really close to me - hopefully would mean delivery is going to be quick and easy ?

I'm sure all the fans who use will be knowledgable :)

Are thy as easy to muck out as pellets?

Just as comparison. Local tack shop sells Verdo I always use LWP. found the verdo rubbish and really dark and sodden. Waste of money I think when I used them between orders.

LWP or 5star I have always been happy with on a deep bed though. I set a 12x12 up with 12 bags and then once the bed has settled add two more bags a week later then between 1/2 to one bag a week when needed. My bed sits at about 5" always with a solid base.

I use Verdo and it is fab.... best thing since sliced bread. I do get annoyed with people paying 5% VAT when horse bedding legally is 20%. Ok you have to shop around to get best price but can still be done with correct VAT. Just brought a pallet of Verdo horse bedding for £265 all in look at their facebook page as has code on it.

Very easy to use and much better value for money then Liverpool and Fivestar!

Well, I am new to this forum and have just bought my first lot of pellets - 50 x 10K bags from the White Horse Bedding Company @ £190 incl delivery and vat.
Have I paid too much?
My first thoughts are, having made up the bed last night and mucked out this morning:
The company reckoned I would need 10 to 12 bags to set up the bed for a 12 x 12 stable, plus a 'few more' if you had a concrete floor, which I do, and like to bank it up the sides, which I do.
So I've used 18. Bed looks adequate but not generous. I had to hold myself back from chucking at least another 6 bags in. I wasn't impressed. I was staring at the best part of seventy quids worth of dampish saw dust looking stuff which was about to get p****** and s***t on! A bed of that size and depth in shavings (about 3 bale's worth) would have cost me approx £25. Though I would normally start a bed with 5 bales at £45 ish
So not a good start.
However, went to muck out this morning and found it very easy as droppings all visible on the surface - probably due to the density of the bed but sadly, I suspect, also because my horse hadn't laid down or rolled around which she normally does, because I have always provided a lovely comfy deep bed).
At this point, I think I am going to have to add another 6 bags! I am very much hoping that this stuff is going to redeem itself along the way and that the recommended top up of 1 - 2 bags per week is correct.
I will keep you mall posted................
