Both Taz and Rio have worn full neck rugs the majority of the winter which is fine but it isnt good if you want a beautiful flowing mane ;)

Rio's mane has supprisingly faired quite well with a bit of care. Taz on the other hand hasnt faired so well but it isnt as bad as it has been in previous years :)

finding a rug that isnt too tight on Rio's neck has been difficult but there are a few that have worked :)

This is what theirs looked like today :) what does your horses mane looked like? and what have you done to prevent it falling out?

excuse how messy they are i didnt brush them before i took pictures so it looks like rats tails! :o

Well this is the first year my horse has worn full neck turnouts consistently, mainly because he loves to roll and I find they keep his neck a bit cleaner. His mane has a gap of about 5 inches a quarter of the way up his neck. I found a chunk of mane outside the field and paniced thinking someone had been in and cut a bit off  Lovely photos and beautiful horses by the way :)

Last year I used a weatherbeeta and he lost mane at base but this year he's in a prem equine and its fine, pony in a Mark Todd full neck hers is also great really thick considering she rubbed her self half bold last summer

In my horse's case I wish some of his mane *would* rub out!! He's mostly Connemara with, I suspect, a bit of cob in there. The only cob bits he seems to have inherited are enormous knees and very thick, rough mane and tail. No matter how much I pull, snip, rake, and thin, I cannot thin it enough. And now I've pulled it too short so it's sticking up again... It's impossible to plait. So I really wish some of it would drop out because of the rugs because I might be able to make him look half decent plaited!! ;) It is still incredibly thick and bushy... it's just marginally less so where the rug has rubbed. Grr.

My 4 all have their manes fully in tact, I use amigo rugs with detachable neck covers and I only put a lightweight neck on as I found its the heat that seems to melt the mane away - with just the lightweight neck covers this doesn't happen! They are fully clipped and don't get too cold as their backs etc are warm from the heavier rug - then if you change up or down in terms of rug weight you can Just whip the neck off and pop it on new rug! I also wash the neck covers every few weeks to keep the inside free of grease etc.

Shadow has been in his MT under rug most of winter and has WB turnouts, and we have a complete mane :D

The fit on WB on him is perfect and I've never found problems with rubbing, when I bought him a PE last year it started rubbing his mane in no time!!

My horse wears her full neck cover when turned out during the day but when she's in at night, she wears a fleecey stable rug with no neck. She isn't clipped, but can't stand the horizontal rain, poor thing, hence the neck cover on the turnout rug. Mane seems to be holding up.

I don't have a photo but both Big Ears and Daisy have been in full neck rugs all winter and both their manes are absolutely fine. Big Ears has a short mane (she'd had a chunk chewed by a horse whilst in training - I ended up pulling it all to the same length for hunting) and Daisy has a lovely long fine mane. Absolutely no problems with full neck rugs at all?!

Amber hasn't got a very profuse mane at the best of times (breed thing I think although her Dad has a fairly decent mane compared to hers) and a bit did fall out at the start of the winter with the rug she came in. She has worn a Rambo full neck since then and no more has gone, I didn't like that white bit anyway :o:D

Ffion is completely fine but hers is thick and tough anyway. She has had a full neck weatherbeeta combo landa all winter. They seem to suit her very well and she has two different weights now.

My boys mane is fine, he's been in a full neck amigo med or heavyweight since October. Hasn't rubbed it at all, it's nice and clean apart from the very top when he rolls!

I have my horses in Mark Todd Heavyweights and still have full manes :) Im so happy because last year all of their manes were a complete mess! I got my MT rugs for a great price on a site called Tic Tac Equestrian but ive also seen them on equestrian discounts as well.

I have my boy in a full neck HW turnout, his mane's looking wonderful, and nice and thick, it's laid itself (which is great!) but all on the wrong side! not bothered by that too much. If warmer at night he has his neck down. Nice full mane, lovely and thick.

im totally jealous of his mane... Rio didnt come with a huge amount of mane :( how depressing... fancy sending me some ;) horsey hair extentions... would just have to dye them black :o

Aww thanks, yes he has got an amazing mane. It was pretty long when I got him, prob same length, although it has got thicker over time. I just keep it in plaits and re-do every 4-8 weeks.

Hehe yes you would need to dye it black, although could look quite interesting with clack body and grey mane!! :p:p:p:p

Rio's tail has thickened up a huge amount since i got him but his mane has stayed about the same :( im afraid he may also have sweet itch as he has started to rub out his tail :'( so very depressing... im hoping hes just a little itchy! fingers crossed!!

Hermoso did that too, I think it is country change. Wash the top of his tail weekly with baby shampoo, that will stop his itching :D

Actually having mine in a full neck this year has done me a favour - I'm growing out his hog and it's now at the length where it can start laying flat which it now is because he's in his rug :)

Anyone who has a horse missing mane.. feel free to take some of Finn's !

He has lived out fully clipped so always in a full neck rug... he has a very thick mane and tail anyway but I plaited up his mane and left it plaited all winter.

This is a week after removing plaits and having it 'squashed flat' under his neck rug

Afro dude!

Normally I would keep him a lot tidier but he has been off with injury and I really couldn't be bothered in the cold :o so he's a hairy frizzy scruffbag right now :D

All 3 0f ours are fine with no rubs - if you get the fit right, it shouldn't rub!

My son's pony came with a full neck rug and only half of his mane left, so I chucked it out and bought a different rug, and have had no problems since.

Shy's mane is actually longer and thicker than ever - he sports a neck cover too. I think it must be the pig oil I slather on to the mane that does it.

Jelous of everyone who has lovely names still. Mine is practically rubbed out a third of the way up from the base :( there is some long stragly bits strangely she had the same rug/s on last year and no bother but this year it's come away ... 11 weeks till first showing show needless to say she is now in neckless rugs much to her disgust lol
