How many Thesis have you written cptrayes?
I would be most interested to read anything of your personal findings
Thank You
Hallelujah we agree at last. And Cleveland Bays. And one or two others. No one is "getting at" Spanish horses here Amaranta, but you keep replying as if we are.
I don't actually feel that anyone is 'getting' at Spanish horses, why on earth would they lol! What I do feel is that farriers are getting the blame (as usual) for every ill suffered by a horse through it's feet. I did object to people stating supposed facts about the Spanish horse and it's feet when they have limited knowledge of them.
I'm sure it slows again as they get older, as humans do, but I disagree with you entirely if you do not think that any horse's metabolic needs drop when they reach sufficient maturity to be ridden. I suspect yours are ridden more than most and their feed is matched more carefully to their work than most, and that you may not have noticed this effect because you are not an average owner in an average livery stable.
I did not say that any horse's metabolic needs do not drop when they reach maturity, what I said was that it happens in the Spanish horse when they reach the age of around 9 or 10, when they settle more in their minds, prior to that, most, but not by any means all, burn off a lot in nervous energy, similar to other 'hot' breeds.
It is NOT simple for people in livery yards where the turnout may be rich ryegrass designed for a dairy herd, where they are not allowed to strip graze, where no starvation paddock is available, where the only turnout is daytime, where the owner works and can't get enough exercise into the horse to keep its weight right down etc etc
If I was in that situation (and I have been) I would move my horse for the sake of his welfare
For many horses and owners it is grossly simplistic to suggest that they "just" need to feed plenty of fibre and a probiotic. Lucy Priory who posts on here is in livery and has recently had the latest batch of hay analysed. It is well over 30% soluble carbohydrates and that is pure poison for her EPSM mare. Not all yards welcome a bathful of soaking hay outside every stable, either, and many owners are forced to feed what they are given as regards forage.
I agree that this is difficult, but even those yards would not object to popping a probiotic into each feed. Most reputable yards would also let you buy in vacuum packed timothy haylage, if they won't then you have to think about moving your horse to somewhere that will - again it is a welfare issue.
You and I obviously have the luxury of looking after our own horses. Not everyone is so lucky and for them life with a carbohydrate sensitive horse is far from simple.
Shut it you.....its MY turn to get sued!![]()
How the hell do you get to that conclusion? I am defending people who do not have my luck and Amaranta's facilities and expertise!
Quirky I couldn't care less for your personal opinion of my posting style, but please feel free to comment again and give me a laugh
Have you any advice for the original poster, or anything to add to this discussion, or did you just join to sling a bit of mud about?
I thought you may wish to know how you came across. In hindsight, I'm sure you must've been told before.

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong in the maintenance of my ponios feet? Would shoes help?

Won't be UI'ing you, much pleasure is derived from sitting back and watching you get wound up on a rather too frequent basis![]()
Amaranta I don't think you have the remotest idea what it's like being an averagely knowledgeable owner in an average DIY livery yard. You know far, far more than the average owner. If you were ever in a DIY yard then I'm guessing it was so long ago you have forgotten what it was like to be forced to take the forage that was supplied, and not be able to find an alternative yard that will allow you to complete your work and family commitments with any ease. For some people, it is compromise or don't own a horse. While I can see that some people might say "then don't own a horse" I'm not sure that I would be among them.

Well I'm jolly glad I give you that entertainment then Quirky. Something to thank me for, eh?
We were ALL average owners once, I think you do people a disservice, not all owners are clueless, neither are they helpless and all of them want to, and indeed do put the needs of their horses first.
Sometimes that need includes shoes.
Something to thank me for, eh?
Oh you'd be right up there withthe star attractions in the Victorian Freak Shows.
