We were having a slight debate at the farm and from another forum so thought I would post on here to hear everyones thoughts/opinions..

Those with grooms/are grooms how much do you pay/charge an hour?
What would you expect to pay/charge for a mornings work including normal stable duties? Or a full time groom doing 6 days a week 7-5?

It seemed to spark a massive debate at the farm so wondered whether some people are just tight or whether I thought it would be more for a decent groom who works well?

What are your opinions?

I dont employ a groom ( I wish unless my dad counts?) but when I was a groom as a student I got £29.00 per week with flat and all utility bills included.
Another job I had as a non student I got just over £140 a week, a gorgeous stone cottage, all my utility bills paid for, a coal allowance and as much wood from the estates wood yard as I wanted so was quite lucky that way but it was the worst job I have ever had.

I employed someone while I was pregnant £10 an hour inc travel time (we were a little out of the way) - was well worth it for someone competent, insured and who I could trust when I couldn't get out to check them.
She only charges 2 hours am for 4 horses turn out muck out etc then 30 mins in the pm to get them in - pretty efficient I thought. Nobody will do yours as quickly as you do your own.

On one yard I charge £10 a day to provide full care (except grooming and riding) for 2 horses. My lad is on the same yard so I'm up there anyway. At my other job I'm paid £7ph, it's only an hour or so each day but only 2 mins up the road from my yard so ties in nicely

I use a freelance groom, and she used to charge £8.00 per hour, but I think she has put it up a bit lately. I don't know if this is charged from her house or when she arrives at my house, but she only lives a couple of miles away, so can usually fit mine in easily on the way out or way home. I only ask her to do the miniumum if I am away, so I have already measured out the feed into separate bags per feed, and only ask for a skip out, not a full stable clean. She is very quick and efficient.
I always think the invoice is less than I was expecting.

When I'm away I pay £ 200 a week for turn out (one with rug and boots) for two, muck out two, hays, waters, feeds, bring in, take off boots, rug change, feed, pick feet, quick groom. Sweep yard and walk way.

Also to let chickens in and out, feed and water (I muck out when I get back).

Poo pick field. Persons has been fab. She lives five minutes away by car.

In the winter we pay our groom £10/hr per week ( 5 mornings a week, just to feed and check ponies) and in the summer we pay £275 per week for 5 1/2 days - which include bringing in, feeding, exercising 3 or 4 ponies ( sometimes the days are short, sometimes very long!) Our groom is a total and utter star, I dread the day she says she's leaving, she's like part of the family now!
