those with heavyweight cobs

My old hw mare was 14.3/15hh and when i got her wouldnt pop a pole, i took her hunting down here in cornwall where we have 5/6ft banks, hedges all made of granite on the pretence that we would go through gates, this mare jumped like a stag all day and dumped me 3 times due to the fact she didnt get up close and personal to the ditches in front of 5 foot banks, hop onto bank and slide off the other side o no - we flew it all in a stag like fashion she left me behind a few times, another bank was coming off a field and dropping into the field below, me holding on and sitting back and the mare decides to jump up in the air for it :o:o:o:o:o horse of a life time and never hunted something so brave again

Yes cobs can jump every horse can 'jump' to a certain extent but some just find it easier. I have to say though anyhorse can pop 1m+ as a single fence, but try a few over a course and see how easy it is for them or add it as a proper spread fence and ill bet not many coblets will leave it up.

Yes there are some but I sometimes wince at seeing gypsy vanner/real heavies being put over such big fences as they arent built for it and if the owners want to jump that height on a regular basis or compete at that height then they maybe should get themselves a horse more built for it.

I ride a welsh x and he can jump for fun for anything up to 3ft and has loose schooled with another foot on top, hes the most comfortable horse is have sat on which is enough for me I dont feel we need to jump massive jumps and I dont think the damage he would probably do to his joints is really worth him popping bigger.

I am loving the pics of feathers flying in these photos though just lovely :D

I'll definately be jumping and doing a bit of XC with Darcy-Boy, went went over trot poles for the first time the other day and he popped over them which was really funny!

I asked my YO if you could do eventing on a cob, she said you could easily, but not really competitively as they'll be slower, but no reason why not! Edited to add - not that I'd do eventing on a cob, just they have the possibility to do it on the right course ;)

I'd rather my Vanner boy than a flighty TB, but that's just me ;)

As post above... its ok saying I've had him over 6ft6 jumps...

A single jump is a lot easier than a whole course of them.

I have had my TB over a 4ft straight. (God knows how I managed it.) Could I do a whole course that height, or would I have done it if it have been a spread fence. No.

I did say on the right course in my previous post, obviously not a course of massive 6'6" jumps, doubles etc.

There's a phrase - horses for courses and you obviously like your TB's and I like cobs... that's obvious from your other post that your TB could outrun anything...

Of course they can, there are some great cobs jumping picks in some past threads. Our cob wasn't much cop to start with (at about 5yo), but she was very overweight. Once she lost weight and started to come off her forehand she became a fab jumper. She could clear 4ft from a stand still, however we didn't compete her too hard as I think you have to take into account the weight they are carrying coming down on those front legs.

Here is our girls last year, sadly it was her first and last year of competition.

With regard to single jumps vs courses, my old cob used to jump routinely round 80-95cm courses with reasonable succcess at local level - he was a veteran when he started competing at all, so no doubt could have been more successful with a more competitive / competent jockey in his youth. No, a HW cob is unlikely to jump around hickstead, but for your average rider's competitive aspirations, I don't think they're inappropriate.

There are plenty of HW cobs doing RC level jumping and I know of a few doing lowish (c.100cm) level BS and BE.

There are exeptions though!
Just saying, but my 13.3hh true heavyweight coblet, full mane, feather ect last night did a 100cm course against 15 other horses, all fine types, all much bigger than him...and he came 4th! Left every single jump up and is agile enough to turn on a sixpence to take the short cuts to get the time. It can be done!

She had a bout of colic out of the blue in November and had to be put down. The next morning we had an e mail from the riding club saying that she & Sophie had won most improved seniors at the club that year - totally gutted, however at least she is immortalized on the club trophy now.

thanks everyone, i only plan to jump up to 2ft6 on him as its just the fun local show jumping classes! i also hav a welsh x who jumps for fun and can do bigger sj but my heavyweight is so interested in poles thought id give him a go to!

Do you.jump them? If so how high? Iv had mine for about a.month and whenever jumps are up he goes towards them and walks over them, however he is a true eavywight so not sure its good to.jump him? He has only just gone 5. Does anyon hav pics a proper chunky horses jumping?
I jump my cob and i think he loves it, he is 16 and can jump about 1m 10 i took have also only had him for a few months, however my friends cob despises jumping and is very lazy ?

I've had my cob for 7 months now and haven't none much jumping on him yet, he has been enjoying jumping so far (not a green horse I just don't know how high he has jumped in the past) he's been popping over 65 to 75 s easily, honestly I think if any horse has the right training then they can definitely jump ?? (although saying that, my friends cob can only pop 25 cm ?)
