I wonder if you would be kind enough to answer a question, musing over something someone said about my horse, do you ever have problems with the napping on the way home from a hack or is it just outward bound ?

Mine has been known to nap on the way home from a hack too .. we came out of a gate and wanted to start walking through the field back to the stables and she decided she wanted to keep turning around to the gate .. every time i put my leg on she would just spin around then keep facing towards the gate .. so not just going away from home but on the way home too! shes just very special lol shes a mare that loves to be out but every now and then she will just start napping out of the blue .. give her a minute and shell come back to you and carry on as if nothing had happened..

Hi
Yes both ways we can come across these issues. I'm not sure it's true napping as she sees something she doesn't like, I ride her forward strongly, she will either go or rear with a whip round. I ride forward like no tomorrow, she goes leaving a trail of dragon breath in our path.
She is a very strange horse, I love her a lot but can never ride on the buckle end!

My young horse is passively resistant on the outward journey & charges back on the homeward journey, I consider both a form of napping as he wants to not leave then get back home.

My horse was a persistent napper, including in the arenas as well. Rearing, reversing and kicking out, but the more I hacked, and also went between hacking alone and in company got better. 2 years on he hacks everywhere on his own with pretty much so issues (occasionally spooks but that's just a little jump) Consistency helped and not giving up :) Good luck, I'm sure you will over come it!
Edit: I got a lot of people who said I'd never get to hack on his own, just keep going and ignore them :D

Mines the same, he's also ridiculously spooky and nervous on the way out but far less so on the way home!
I'd say this is nappy but on a minor level... Minor/ irritating that is ;)

Yep, my youngster has just started napping going off the yard on the way out and back onto the yard on the way home! She behaves exactly the same, tosses her head, stamps her feet, doesn't want to go forward. Can't please her apparently, doesn't want to go out, then doesn't want to come back! She's totally relaxed on the yard and once we've cleared her 'baulk points'. Working through it now.

Mine gets stuck everywhere with no particular excuse (i.e. something scary). He has been known to manage a one hour hack with no problem and then get stuck within two metres of the stable, literally I could have reached out and touched the stable and he would be stuck, reversing and refusing to take the final few steps for me to get off.
