By facilities, I mean a school. How do you cope in the winter with no nice surface to ride on? How do you manage to carry on having lessons etc?

We don't have a school, and I'm trying to find an instructor who will come out and is happy to teach on a dry corner of our field, however no one wants to. I don't have my own transport yet (just paid to do my trailer lessons and test, which I passed, but now need to save up for a new car and trailer....oh and our wedding next year!!).

Maybe I should give up until spring :(

me neither, :( i would fine a flat piece of grass in field and section off with electric fence. an instructor should come out as long as it is not very poor weather. my be worth phoning around a few instructors to see if will come out. may cost a bit more but you know they should do a good job. :) as long as it is pretty flat and not boggy you can do most things in it such as jump and flat work ext x

I hire an arena. Luckily we have one which is only a 15 minute hack away. I only have half hour lessons so I just hire the arena for that time which reduces the price. It doesn't look like I'll be getting my lesson this week though with all this snow.

I hack as much as I possibly can and trailer once a week to my instructors and once a week to our local competition centre even just to use the school and pay for a clear round.

We just bought some lights and put them up in a corner of one of our fields, not good enough for riding but it means I can lunge for 20/30 mins to keep him fit. Then I hack/compete/ have a lesson at the weekend. Maybe you could do similar with the lights so you can keep riding? I'm sure you'll be able to find an instructor that would come to you.
Hope you get something sorted :)

As an ex instructor I turned out in all weathers and all situations so there must be other instructors that do? I once regularly taught someone on a smaller than a school, flatish patch of grass 15 mins hack away from where she kept the pony. I used to meet her at her field and walk with her to the "school". I taught her on the way :)

So long as you have somewhere with no loose horses then I could work with that, and I'm sure there must be other instructors that can??

As an owner, I'm ashamed to say this, but I gave up and moved somewhere with facilites!

Ah wish I could find someone like you!! I'm just keen to see someone every now and again to keep the bad habits at bay and to give me something to work on until the next time, even if its for just 30 mins.

I love my little yard, and am holding out until I get transport sorted, as then I would just box to my old instructors!

instructors or good ones at least should come out to teach! i dont think i know more than 2 that will not come out! that is bad and such a shame. the amount of pennies they take off ppl for lessons per hour i would come out! all i could suggest is keep looking, ask a few friends and livery yards in the area along with local tack shops, if they could recommend anyone that maybe you dont know about or didnt think of? failing that google search. after that i am not really sure what to suggest short of hiring a box for a few hours to take you to riding centre ext???? but then it will end up costing double plus. if you can not find anyone can you go without the lessons for a while till you have done you test? xx

I'll keep looking, and hopefully find someone. I have done my test and passed - however that cost about £800, and now need to pay for a new car capable of towing, buy a trailer as well as carry on saving for my wedding next year! As hard as I work, I don't earn enough to pay for it all!!!

I havent had a lesson in ages and I'm just feeling a bit fed up of never being able to improve!
