Those with TB's, how big is your horse and how much do you weigh?

Mine's 15.3 (and a half) and we always state him at 500kg, I hold little faith in weight tapes so I condition score and go by eye, as he was a hat rack when he arrived I'm pretty spot on (although he did gain TOO much weight last summer, good this year though!)

Dont have a TB any more, but my old chestnut (in my sig) was 16hh and I have always hovered around the 11 to 11 1/2 stone, the bay in my sig was an ex racer i had on loan too, he was 16.3hh

both carried me perfectly well!

Oops! I totally misread this! :D

I don't weight 500kg! :D

I think I weight 9 stone, I was 8.5 last time I weighted myself but I've put on weight, so yeah about 9 stone and he's 15.3hh and a half!

Am 5ft10 weigh 10st, TB is a chunky type, 16.2hh - although she is out of work till spring we did do everything, xc dressage, jumping, fast hacks etc

Well my tb used to be 15.3 but she broke her withers and now she's around the 15.1 mark...

I'm about 10 stone with all riding gear on, but sharer weighs more, about 12 stone, and vet says this is fine. Horse seems to cope fine, although the sharer doesn't do much, just short pottery hacks really.

Thanks all. I ask because I have the opportunity to ride a 15.2 TB and I am 13.5 stones.

I do ride quite light though and probably won't get out of walk - I'm happy to just pootle around!

Once mucking out etc the weight does drop off me too, so if/when I wanted to step it up and go further or faster I should be at a better weight.

I will ring the horses vets and ask his opinion first I think. Owner seems happy with my weight but I don't want to break her horse!

My TB is 16.1 and I'm 5ft5 and 8 stone. My last TB was 15.2. When I rang up about the 15.2 when I was looking to buy her owner said if I was heavier then 11.5 stone not too come but she was a petite little thing with spindly legs. It depends on how chunky a TB she is I guess but well done you to be concerned if she is big enough :).

I wouldn't worry too much about how big he or she is, it's more a case of a well muscled back and well fitted saddle, no matter what your weight is, you might get a big 17.1 TB that may struggle to carry a certain weight where as a better built TB of a smaller lighter frame with a well fitted saddle wouldn't blink an eye. :)

\/\/\/\ What she said :)

Buster is 16.1-ish I think and isnt particularly fine but isn't chunky either really, he is just perfect for me hehe :-) And i am 10 stone (cringe) and 5ft 3 but he seems okay with me on his back x

The 2 I ride regularly are 16.3hh and 15.1hh, the bigger one is a fairly chunky chap and feels huge, whereas the little one is incredibly fine. At 5'3" and just under 8st I know I must look ok on her but feel extremely underhorsed!

The TB I had in Cyprus was 16 hands and I was at the time 13 stone.

We used to hack out for at least 2 hours a day in mountain terrain, judging by the way he used to take any opportunity to go into turbo mode (ass down and into wharp speed!) he had no problems with carrying me at all.

My Tbs have ranged from 15.2 hh to 16.1 hh and I weigh between nine and a half and ten stone depending on how many pies I have eaten.

My tb mare is 16hh and when I rode her I was around the 9st mark...now she is retired I have put the weight on, she is still her svelte like self!!
11st was the limit put on her to carry...

I have 2 TB mares, one is a small, fine 16hh, the other a big chunk 16.3hh

I weigh 60kgs (about 9.5 stone I think)!

I prefer riding my big girl, I don't feel too heavy on the little one, but I do feel a bit long and tall for her, I'm 5'7 and the all important half!

I'm going to say what I always say on these threads. NH horses carry, at a minimum, around the 10 stone mark. That is at speed, over big fences for at least 2 miles. There is no reason on earth why a muscled TB can't easily carry 12 stone, and the rest.

OP Personally I think thirteen and a half stone is too heavy for a 15.2 TB. You need to add on the weight of tack and your boots etc and you could easily be looking at a total of 15 stone.

When I weighed 13.5 stone I was riding at a riding school, I would invariably get put on a TB! I was very surprised. I always expected them to get the shire types out their stables for me.

None of the horses had a problem doing an hour in the school, including lots of trotting, cantering and jumping. Bearing in mind that mine wasn't the only lesson they had been ridden in either.

If the owner thinks you'll be fine then I wouldn't worry too much.
People do tend to vastly underestimate what horses are capable of carrying.

Yes, indeed, horses are capable of carrying an awful lot of weight without complaint. After all they are very strong animals. This is all well and good if they are being ridden say once a week for an hours' lesson. But if the same horse is then asked to carry that weight several times a week for many months then very often there ARE consequences to the detriment of the soundness of the horse. Not always, of course, but very often. Just because you were put on the TBs and they appeared to carry you effortlessly, does not mean you were not too heavy for them. I would not put more than 11 stone (plus tack) on an 15.2 hh TB. I have seen far too much long term damage done by heavy riders. Also, you may not have looked 13 and a half stone. Many people are far heavier than they look. The OP is refering to a SMALL TB (15.2hh).

I am 5ft 7 and weigh about 12 stone. My TB is 15.1. I don;t ride him anymore as he is 30. But when he was in full work, I probably weighed anywhere between 10 and 11 1/2 stone and it was never an issue.

Also, he was a polo pony before I had him and carried LARGE MEN with no problems, and is still with me at aged 30 so did him no real harm that I can tell.

That said, he has short little cannon bones, not spindly long matchstick legs. He is also well rounded with a deep girth. My friend also had a 15.1 TB and they couldn't be more different, you wouldn't have wanted more than 11 stone on hers, if that.

My mare is 16hh and I weigh 9 stone.

I don't think its so much the weight - I heard on here a comment for which I agree - you can have a light unbalanced rider do more damage than a heavier balanced rider.

my tb is 15.3hh and very dainty and im 11 stone and 5 foot 4" .i had back surgery two years ago and ive put 2 stone on! yikes .defo wouldnt ride him if put anymore on-maybe time to say no to the second slice of cake at elevenses! lol:rolleyes:
