Do you change their diet during the hunting season, or feed them any differently on the days they go hunting/beating?

Nope - I feed by eye so change their diet on a daily basis according to how they look? That is the same all year round Although I am not going to let mine hunt any more after today's vets bill lol

With lurchers I dont let them eat before running...they get slightly more to eat afterwards than they would on an average day.

My dogs are gun dogs and work from the first week in Sept to the end of Jan - during that time they get feed a working kibble that is higher in protein than what they are fed in the summer months. They also get more oil added to their food and one of them steps up his joint supplement

^^^ This. Mine also have pasta, rice, chicken or the like after a shoot day, as we're shooting 6 days a week through most of Nov, most of Dec and Jan.

Higher protein food during the shooting season. The feed we used changes itself accordingly, they are a local brand that make a low protein feed during the non shooting season. Although we always keep a bit of the higher protein stuff as we still do a bit of shooting during summer.
They always get a their feed made up with hot water after a days working. Give them a nice warm tum

Otto's feed doesn't change as it is already 40% protein, I don't think it needs be any higher lol! He gets fed by eye, so it might increase if he drops in weight.
On the days he works (if ever!) he gets a sausage and a bit of cheese or something similar at lunch time, enough to tick him over but not to interfere with him running around.

, but for a full representation, we do a different kind of work, my dog is intolerant to high protein food and we tend not to feed before work - my breed is prone to bloat/torsion and full stomach + excitement/exertion can cause huge problems.
The work we do is tracking and he gets either nothing or a light feed beforehand. He thinks he is working for food - in training, when he finds the articles, he gets a food reward. Any feed he gets during a training day, he must find himself.

Actually CC you may think its different but my dogs just seem to know when its a shooting day - whether my attire has anything to do with it - I don't know, I suspect so!! but anyway - my dogs really seem to know that they are off working that day!
Consequently, as much as I try to keep a routine, they never eat their breakfast that morning - far too excited!!
I have to make sure that I have snacks (bonios or whatever) with me throughout the day to feed them when we stop for soup and lunch
just to keep their energy levels up ( or at least it placates my mind!!)

I have gundogs. They only get fed once a day (tea). I use same feed all year round. As when not working she is at the yard with me so always on the go & is a light framed dog. I feed by eye too so if she drops then I up it or vissa versa.
Also I carry Chudleys big bite for lunch when working.
Again warm water when cold & cold water when warm.
I know hunting hounds are not fed on the morning of hunting days but on their return to kennels. Or has been the practice at all the hunts I have worked with.

Mine are usually fed twice a day, but on a shoot, they also get a small amount at lunch time.

Not hunting dogs (thought they'd happily hunt and kill sheep etc given the chance!) but I do have a pack of working huskies. When they are working (colder months) we add meat (from the butcher) to their existing diet. Year round they are on Royal Canin 4300 and the meat is extra when they are working. Most butchers will do dog mince - but some do better than others. I get stuff that you could eat yourself. I also give them bones once a week (god bless the butcher!) which keeps their teeth in excellent condition.

Mine have low protein food and a bone a day from the butchers. They get bigger meals when the weather is colder or when they look like they might be losing weight.

My parents breed and race greyhounds - when they are racing, they get a high protein racing diet (especially formulated for racing dogs), they have breakfast in the morning.... baileys no. 1 cereal with powdered milk and wafcol racing complete for dinner..... they also get pasta when actually racing and fresh meat...... they do not get fed dinner on the day they are racing (they do get fed AFTER the race)...... greyhounds have to monitored closely, as their weight affects their race timings once graded, and they have to be kept at a constant weight....
