He's been here nearly six weeks so it's probably time I got him introduced :)

As you may remember, I lost Rufus and Button is quick succession at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, leaving Willow an only pooch. It's fair to say, she was depressed (for want of a better word) for a while. Or maybe the better word was 'lost' because she didn't really know what to do with herself.

I suppose I had been looking for another since before Button died but there were definitely no springers about at that time so I eventually turned to a different source. My friend from school regularly shares posts of Facebook from a pointer rescue called Apollo's Angels, who rescue pointers (and other breeds) from Cyprus. Rescuing from abroad was something I had never considered before and, to be perfectly honest, I had in the past been quite critical of some of these overseas rescues.

However, I did my research into this one and the set-up is excellent, the backup is first rate, should you need it. All the dogs are health checked, blood tested, hip x-rayed (if over 12 months), passported, neutered, wormed, vaccinated etc etc before they allow them to travel. A lot of the dogs are ex hunting dogs that have been discarded but potential owners are thoroughly warned they will have a high prey drive.

The first dog (Loki) I applied for was adopted immediately so I missed out on him but then rescue suggested Chester, who is a hound x pointer and the rest, as they say, is history. I had to wait a few weeks while my home visit and his flight were organised but it wasn't that long and he arrived on Sunday 22nd August 2021. Him and Willow hit it off from the second they clapped eyes on each other and spend most of the day playing and messing, then sleeping, then playing and faffing about some more. She's four and he's just 18 months, so if he gets a bit too much she just tells him off and he backs down but that rarely happens - she adores him!!

I have however had to get used to the drama that comes with a hound!! Oh my days, he is such a wimp and he doesn't care how loud he yelps/yodels if he thinks he's hard done by. Yesterday he every so slightly caught his paw on a bit of sticky out blackberry bush as we were walking past. Good lord, you would think someone had amputated his whole leg...........such drama :)

Anyways, enough rattling, here are some piccies of the chap. Sorry the piccies are HUGE, I can never work out how to shrink them down.

He worships the sun

Lovely photos!
I think you are very brave, though, taking on a 'foreign rescue', especially a hound. I know someone in RL who has just rehomed a failed Spanish rescue greyhoundx. He sounds like hard work.

Welcome to the madness that is life with a hound and a spaniel. And the madness that goes with dealing with hounds, its not just drama, expect cunning intelligence, fierce intelligence too

Speaking as one in the land of “ foreign” it’s not all bad..these hunting dogs are often given up at a year of age.Surplus to requirements, yet ,in the right active home make wonderful companions.
They are lucky if they get into a breed specific rescue and health tests are done.
He has definitely landed on his paws with you and he looks wonderfully happy.
Coupled with your spaniel he couldn’t be in better comany.:cool:

The streetdogs are a different story..eg Romania.Desperate souls.

I must admit I started to have serious anxiety as the delivery date got closer. I've had lots and lots of dogs, all of them second hand but I've always been able to meet them first and then introduce my dogs to them so this was stressing me somewhat. I had been sent tonnes of videos of him interacting with other dogs and knew I didn't have a thing to worry about but I still worried!!

He's been a joy really and slotted into life a lot easier than some of my springers have. He's exceptionally easy going and friendly with everything and everyone. He was unsure of himself the first week or so, when we were out walking and did a bit of yodelling and grumbling at people in the distance but that has totally stopped now. He is however an escape artist so I've had to re-fortify my garden fencing........twice!!

He does have a sensitive tummy but so does Willow, so they both have to watch what they eat and he's now settled on a 'sensitive' food. I doubt I will ever have the courage to let him off the lead when walking because his prey drive is HIGH but I don't mind. Willow isn't allowed off lead either because of her medical issues but they both have free run of the garden all day so they're not missing out :)

He's lovely. Hopefully they'll exercise each other a good amount of time!

His markings are cute - love the one on top of his head.

Oh he is just gorgeous. Those markings on his head are amazing and as a hound lover and ex owner of a bleu de gascogne hound I know exactly what you are talking about . Tried cutting claws yet???......:D
What a lucky chap he is. I wish more of the discarded hounds over here could find wonderful new homes as they are so lovely and give so much back when given a chance.
