I've put off writing this as I keep thinking she's going to leap up and treat us all to a good tongue lashing for being melodramatic nincompoops, but that tact hasn't worked, so I'm trying this one instead...

D1 and Friend went cubbing on Sunday. First time for all of them. Had a brilliant time, other than Friend bounced off at full pelt onto a stubble field (not sure how galloping down hill over stubble counts as beginners stuff, but hey, who am I to question it).

I have had the full details today and whilst I am very grateful that some people stopped to help, I am less so that they waited 'till Friend was back on, but took off full pelt before my just sixteen (by a day), first time out, daughter was able to get onto a by then wheeling pony! She had got off to help Friend. What is the point in stopping to help one accident if they then very nearly cause another? Luckily D1 is fit, agile and doesn't scare easily, so managed to get on and stay on.

Anyhoo, I digress (wo what's new!). Friend was a bit sore and lame, but we all thought it would easy off. Still not good Monday morning. Her hubby called me to say he was taking her to hospital to get checked over. She was in the background saying she was okay. Did not sound okay, so I threatened to turn the car round at the next exit (on M1 at the time), belt back up there and boot her all the way to A&E! She's the one that made me go and I found out I'd broken my back.

The short story is: she's not quite right. They've MRI'd her and x-rayed her to within and inch of her life, but one leg isn't quite behaving. No doubt it is a battered nerve somewhere and she will be fine, but any spare Get Well Soon thoughts would be much appreciated :)

Thank you. Hot chocolates and chocolate Hobnobs :D

:( fingers crossed friend makes a full and very speedy recovery. Hopefully it's something small that will come right in the next day or so.

Thank you all :)

Yes, it did hurt :(. She's on a good combination of painkillers!

I think she just likes the beds in there :D. I obviously sang their praises far too much. It was weird going onto the ward I was on a couple of months ago! I was recognised as 'the horse rider in the side-room'! Yikes.:cool:

Ta muchly for thoughts :)

All the best to your friend. Here's hoping that this is just minor nerve damage which will soon recover. Do make sure that she stays where she is until the medics say she can go home.
I do sometimes think that we must all be mad - mind you, as I know to my cost you don't have to be hunting over a stubble field to land on the ground, a nice quiet hack round the lanes can end in disaster too!

Absolutely and completely barking mad!

:D

But I'd rather be hurt doing something that I love, than live to a ripe and steady old age too scared to walk down the street (falls can happen anywhere) :D

Yes, she will stay put :D. She wants to know what's going on with her leg. I think the frustrating thing will be if they can't work it out and discharge her on painkillers and with the instructions of seeing how it goes! She's worried about riding again. I've told her that it will be fine, even if there is any lingering numbness, she's a good enough and experienced enough rider to be able to use her body and seat and will compensate accordingly.

Yes I went to work on Monday to find that no less than 4 staff members, me included, had slipped and fallen in the damp weather on Saturday, no horses involved at all, and done ourselves a variety of injuries of varying degrees of severity - one poor soul has damaged 3 ligaments and one tendon in her foot. I believe the doctor has prescribed box-rest! I was picking elderberries with sister, who climbed the tree onto the stable roof. I stayed on the ground and bent to go under a branch - guess who came to grief?:D

I certainly agree with you that I'd rather take the risk of doing something that I love.:)

Oh Mrs M - that's not good. My heart was in my mouth earlier when I read about the fall and then she got back on...a perfectly normal thing to do....until you have a near miss.

Sending her hospital vibes, love and healing for a speedy recovery. Tell her the green and yellow sweeties are the best! I hope she's entertained...I had a VERY nice male nurse to help my afternoons pass quickly! xx

PaS - I hope you're okay (I'm guessing I guessed right lol).

There's a guy at a client's site who twisted his leg down a rabbit hole - nearly three months off work and an operation. Somone else was on the beach, tripped and was off for a month!

M - she was given the choice of either get back on, or get an ambulance! Maybe they didn't mean to be so abrupt, but she thought her option was get back on (she didn't realise she was so battered at that point). When I came off Dizz, I got back on after about ten minutes. Didn't jump again, but Dizz was being a bit stressy and we had a bit of a discussion, including going backwards at speed because she didn't want to go forwards to where I wanted to be :rolleyes:

Yikes, hope she is ok!

Maybe drop the hunt secretary a line about what happened, the field master shouldn't have cleared off until both were back in the saddle and happy.

Thank you all :)

Hunt Master wasn't there. I don't think any of the Hunt staff were, they were 'experienced hunters'. Friend was given a choice of ambulance or back on the horse. D1 was still on the ground when they all took off :(

As it was meant to have a slow and steady section, which had been discussed by Friend with the Hunt, I think a letter is a good idea. I wouldn't have let D1 go had I known it was to be so fast over that terrain. I have no doubt that she is up to it, etc., but for an intro meet... There was a child there on a lead rein.

The field master should have been there, his job is to lead the field and keep them together/safe. I'm no expert having only followed on foot before but when I have seen falls on the field the field master has always been around and has stopped the whole field while the person is remounted.

I hope your friend is felling more comfortable this morning, I've been thinking about her. x

At least after a night in the white walled place, you can swap stories about the nurses, ward politics, yummy hospital food (must learn how to get the cheeky grins) and joys of magical sweeties....

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

More good vibes on the way, hoping she'll be right soon. If its any reassurance I felt very numb through the groin area after my fall, due to the torn muscles ligaments etc, took some time to wear off. Of course my friends on yard thought it was very funny to have a numb you know what!! Until they realised how long lasting the damage turned out to be of course. But all good now although still a funny sensation there when I do too much. Do hope it is nothing more serious for your poor friend - at least she is in the right place, I do hope they come up with a conclusive diagnosis though
