my horse suffers from dust allergies and cannot be bedded on straw or 'normal' cheapy shavings....

have tried easibed and bedmax but ahve been having to put in 3-4 bales a week- every 2 days as he just trashes his bed. Have tried deep litter and taking the wet out each day nothing works and i simply cant afford spedning £20 a week on just bedding along with everything else!! sods law he was clean on straw isnt it?!

help! any suggestions appreicated!

I use megazorb which is hemp based and really absorbent then top it up with 1 bale of easibed or similiar once a week.
You need about 6 bags of megazorb initially but is absorbs all the wet then I use easibed for droppings and take out some wet once a week. That way the floor is dry and my filthy horse is clean and doesnt stink. He likes to lay down at night and I got fed up with washing his stable rugs.It really does work.

Cellie - I've been trying different sorts of bedding for my mucky mare. I tried Hemcore which is the inner pasrt of the stem of the hemp plant and is really good and makes for a very LIGHT wheelbarrow but I honestly don't like the look, smell, rollability of it. So I tried Megazorb which is great - I just use an occasional bag and put it down where she pees the most. But I'm sure it's shavings that are hi-baked as it were to make them super absorbent. The bags are half the size of a standard bag of shavings so a mix of normal shavings and Megazorb works for my girl!

Rubber matting and a small shavings bed?

hmm that might be better as feed merchants dont supply the other things, only thing is if the wee runs into his haylage (he has to have it on floor) and he cant have a bucket as he chucks it about!

right thats the next plan of action and if that doesnt work he can live out!!

Good rubber matting drains underneath so the wee should run away (and form a nasty pool at the back of the stable if unlucky but shove a hose down every week). I use rubber and a scattering of shavings and it works a treat - I can just brush the crap to one side and shovel it into the barrow. Easy and cheap - apart from the cost of the mats. Having done this three times for our various horsed i like the really light smooth surfaced mats because they lift easily and sweep easily.

We have sealed matting - that you do not lift, a half bed of shavings and apart from sweeping the bobbly matting its fab (have a very large stable!)!! I take wet out every day and can make 2 bags of shavings last a week when on DIY over hols (although we are allowed ad lib shavings if on Part Livery).

God your horse must be messy - our mare who has managed 13 poo's in a night rarely has more than one Bedmax a week

Personally in your case would go for rubber matting and megasorb

he is officallly a tramp! the edges are fine its just the middle is a brown mess in the morning!

The megazorb works so well you dont need to wory about haylage.I like to feed of the floor and have never had a problem. My horse pees for england that is why I went over to megazorb but I like him to have a bigger bed so I add easibed or beddown plus he mashes his poo and the top dressing helps.
