I'd like to point out that he was racing against other top class horses and he was lengths clear!

Sorry for hijacking your post, it's just every time I hear the words 'Standardbred' or 'pacer' I go off on a tangent!

On the blinkers front, we raced Star in full blinkers to start but found she switched off, so opened her up to can't see backs. I ride her in an open bridle because she likes to check out the scenery and being an ex-racehorse I prefer it if she can see what's coming up behind her (especially other horses out hunting), otherwise they'd fly past her and she'd be off like a shot! As it is, she can see them coming and she just takes off anyway thinking she's racing! But it's less of a surprise to her, she doesn't like surprises bless her!

I use french blinkers (sheepskin cheekpieces) on my lad for mounting issues. When I mount him his eyes are fixed to what's going on behind him, he will see my leg swing over, spook/bolt and leave me on the ground.
With the blinkers it relaxes him during the mounting process as his vision from behind is blocked therefore he is concerting on what's going on in front of him.

Just to add my lad was raced in french blinkers too so it's a bit obvious his eyes were shooting about everywhere distracting him!
