Hi all
My mare has developed what I can only describe as a hard lump, well two actually near her spine. it's not vertebrae as it's actually to the side of the spine. It's not soft, or swollen, no heat. It actually feels hard, like a calcification of the bone. Wondering if it's a form of kissing spine? Vet is coming out Thursday so not riding until she has the all clear but worrying myself silly over way it could be in the mean time. Any thoughts?

Cant seem to post a pic on here 🤔

If they are about thumbnail size, they might be sweat lumps. My horse gets them in the summer if I'm not scrupulous about riding in clean numnahs. They do disappear. We tend to get them in the summer when he gets a lot sweatier than in the winter when he is clipped. I wash with malaseb when really sweaty and make sure I always wash off saddle patch and girth every time I ride in the summer. They cause no problems.

We had one at work that sounds similar.
Started as a tiny raised bit and st worse was about half a golf ball sized.
It started sore, and was on and off sore to touch (hard, he was fine about gentler poking!)
I was horrified by said lump.
Physio said to ride with a foam
Pad with a hole cut out over the bump which they did for ages. It got smaller, then they’d try without the foam and it would get bigger.
No-one apart from myself seemed to find this even a little disturbing or worrying (just a little saddle pinch!)
The horse in question then had an injury and was out of work for, maybe 6 months. The bump has all but gone. I’m interested to see what happens when he returns to proper work.

I’d be really interested to hear what your vet says and if they were the same thing. It always annoyed me that no proper investigatory work was done on ours.
