thoughts on Irish Draught x welsh D?

I'm looking at buying an ID x Welsh youngster, and just wanted to hear if anyone's experienced this cross, and what they're like!
His sire is a 17hh ID, mum was 15hh welsh section D. He's 4 in June. Was born bay, currently steel grey, and getting lighter!

He still looks pretty cut and shut - very big, high bum (about 15.3/16hh), front end still quite small. Nice Welshie head.

Seems to have a nice character, pretty much unbroken, but lunges on a headcollar nicely and stands well.

Love to see any pics if anyone has similar!!
 
I have one who's 5 this year, I often describe him as a "cut and shut"! He keeps having dramatic growth spurts but is finally levelling out. I'm a bit useless at putting pics up but will try later. Whereabouts is he, the parents sound similar to my boy's, and mum had the next year's foal with her when I got mine.
 
Would love to see a pic mainpower if you can work it out! I think you have to add images to an album and then post the links.
The one I'm looking at is in Kent now but bred in Cornwall...
 
Love them, our mare who we lost at age 7 to EGS was out of an ID / Dutch Warmblood / TB mare by a section D and our cob we have now it out of an ID /TB mare by a section D. Brilliant temperament, great stamina and good shoulder and boy can he move and he would jump the moon!! He surprises everyone who thinks he's just a stuffy cob :) Only thing is he's a wimp like a TB when it comes to pain and horrible weather!!

This is what I'm thinking! A friend has been offered a 5 month old one for a very reasonable price, so I'm going to go have a look at it. I have no idea what to expect though! If she's not interested in him a may be. I would imagine could turn out with something along the lines of small hunter or a very smart show cob....
 
My share horse is ID x (Sec DxTB). We call him a Celtic Sport Horse just to add £2k to the price :D . He is a superstar. Jump, intelligence and honesty of a Welshie, calmness and sensibleness of an ID. Personality wise not too much TB I'd say although he does have some pretty paces which we attribute to the TB. He's a very talented, genuine boy but also pretty lazy so does just enough to get the job done (without having to harrass him too much) and then goes back to sleep. He's the easiest horse to take anywhere as he never gets wound up and always does well.

Physically however he's hilarious. Rather than being an overall mix of all three he has distinct parts. A tiny ponyish head, a skinny but long TB neck, a Sec D (i.e very round!) belly and a huge ID backside on spindly TB legs with feathers Nebo Black Magic would be proud of(if we let them grow!). He's built like a trivial pursuit wedge...oh and he's 17hh. Despite this, he manages to be quite handsome! I'd really recommend that sort of mix.

Excuse the small jump, it was number 1 and a generous course builder - this was at a 90 ODE believe it or not.

My first thoughts would be why would anyone want to cross ID and Section D. Especially if the mare was the ID, what a waste of a year of her life. TB on ID or pure ID yes but not Welsh.

A big Draught on a pony mare is pushing the boundaries for foaling too.

I have one but she's only two so not sure what she will grow up to be. She has a fantastic temprement and is very quick to learn. She came to me virtually unhandled and very nervous but has come round lovely now. She's not going to be huge as she's only about 15hh at the moment but I will be happy if she makes 15.2hh.

This. Sounds like rather an odd combination to me, not one I would put together or consider when looking to buy.
 
Why not ID/Welsh? Same as any other cross bred. Both horses pictured I would definitely not turn my nose up at, they're lovely. Some of you are off my Christmas card list !!!

Thankyou - although he does have some TB too. I think the youngster is lovely too, just my sort of horse.

Couldn't agree more!! Our boy wad bred to be 16.2 eventer but the mare ended up having twins and Sandy was the weak twin and he survived, albeit with several blood transfusions and was hand reared but wouldnt change him for the world. He's now the big thing and a 15hh pocket rocket who at the age of 15 has just learnt half pass!!
Nothing wrong at all with id x Welsh

I shall find a photo of our gorgeous boy.
