Thoughts on radios playing all day in yards

I like having radio 4 on, often interesting programmes and no loud music. I have noticed that my two seem to like radio 4 - probably as it is background voices rather than loud noise. If I can't sleep I find putting on radio 4 or the world service soon has me dropping off.

If I am up the yard on a Saturday evening, then they do get a bit of a blasting with Absolute Classic Rock - takes me back to my youth as I sing along.

we used to have the radio on all day and the horses seemed to enjoy the music, one of the welsh section D stallions had a particular genre he used to like that was the 60's he used to kick hell out of the doors if we played any other music except for the 60's when we were there

That's rubbish! I run a company with one employee other than myself, and no means whatsoever for listening to music - no radio, not even any speakers on the computers. PRS have spent a lot of ££ this year insisting I need a licence, they've sent about 10 letters, to my work address AND to my home address, and have telephoned me about a dozen times too.

They tell me if there are ANY employees you need a PR licence. I tell them that we CAN'T listen to any music because we don't have any speakers, so I don't need a licence. They concede I won't, and at my suggestion agree I won't be contacted again. Then I receive another letter which I ignore, and they follow it up with a 2 phone calls (I think to listen to our 'background music' of silence). Then I receive the same at HOME. I am fed up with being harrassed, it's almost as bad as not having a TV licence because you don't have a TV!

You're right.

Any company with an employee has to have a licence. We have a garage with one employee, and we have to have one. If it was my husband and his partner only we wouldn't. We've even considered saying that the employee is deaf, so not listening!!

Personally I hate it. I like peace and quiet! I like to let my thoughts wander when mucking out e.t.c.

I have however thought about having the radio on in the school so that I dont get too engrossed in what Im doing. I think music as I ride might be a good idea. I find I rider better when I have someone in the school with me or a mild distraction.

Yard I had my old boy at, used to have the radio really loud in the tackroom of the morning - I was so glad I was round the "poor" side of the yard and couldn't hear it. Having to listen to radio 1 would have driven me and the horse up the wall.

Funny that particular sounds remind me of particular yards - Jennifer Rush and the Power of Love reminds me of a yard where I had my little mare when I first bought her and Frankie Goes to Hollywood relax reminds me of an event yard I worked in as it seemed to be on the radio all the time.

Only if your broadcasting to more than 12 people do you need a license...a horse, 2 yard cats and the mice don't count!!!

I wonder if my 4 horses, 3 stable cats, 3 dogs and myself and my friend count??!!!

I have Radio One on all day. I listen to it in the office and my horses and cats listen to it too. I don't have it very loud and Baby Cat likes sunbathing beside it.... I have to turn it off though if I am having half an hour of relaxation, a beer and cuddles on Friday evenings as it's far too much for me!! The horses seem to enjoy it and so do I :p

if i am on the yard then the radio is on!
which is pretty much all day every day i would be bored to tears without it.

i remember working on a different yard and at about 330 when it was time to put everything to bed, the girl i was working with would wack it up super loud to give us the motivation and energy to put finish the day as we were usually done in by then. i love listening to scott mills while im finishing the yard off it puts me in a good mood!!
