Thoughts on this pony?

As a wee project. Toying with the idea of getting something to then sell towards the end of summer whilst Torres has a decent time off any ridden work or pressure.

Confirmation looks odd but not sure if that is the surface. Not sure I'd pay more than 400/500 quid...It's about 25 mins from me. Never done this before but I would have thought if he is hacking out well, good in traffic, schooled okay and popping a 2"3 course he would be worth at least 1500 in 3/4 months? All going well obviously...

14hh Rising 5 year old Dun Registered New Forest Gelding
I have owned Harvey since he was weaned and he has done a fantastic job keeping my other horse company. We went out and did some in hand showing when he was a 2 year old. He has been walked out in hand and has seen traffic, but not for a while.
He has always been handled regularly and has good groundwork. We introduced a saddle last year and established long lining in the school.
He now feels physically and mentally ready to begin more regular work.
He has had the winter off and will need bringing back in and the groundwork re-establishing.
He is only for sale as I’m used to much larger horses – although he will be more than capable of carrying the weight of a small adult.
He really is going to be an awesome all rounder – he is brave and inquisitive and has a brilliant jump on him.

He's losing his winter coat at the moment and is chocolate dun, but for most of the year he is a golden dun!

So cute... Looks like a nice sort. I love ponies. If you feel you have the experience and time to bring on a youngster it would certainly be worth going to have a look.
 
His conformation is not odd, he is just incredibly overweight in the first two photos.

He is registered, nice colour and good height, so if sound and sensible doing what you have suggested in 3 months time I would say he is worth £1500 easily.

I paid over double this amount for my forester who had not done much more than what you have suggested he could do in 3 months time. This was a 5 year old and over 7 years ago so I know the market is different {he does have very good breeding and done very well at the breed show as a youngster though}
 
I would always wonder if it only take 3/4 months of regular work etc to treble the price (your estimate) why wouldn't current owners do it? Have the tried to start him And found him tricksy
 
Oh boy he is FAT! It makes his ickle legs look like twiglets. There could be a nice pony underneath it all though if he;s sound and trainable. He doesn't look horribly wonky, a bit downhill if the photo is representative of RL and not foreshortening him. Could do with a bit more bend in the hind leg.

As his colour is mentioned so prominently in his ad, I did hope that the pony was actually dun, but when I scrolled down... no. Ah well, I'm sure that's irrelevent to you anyway M. ;)
 
Overweight and not my cup of tea but a registered connie could be a very good bet as a project for that money, they are popular and good, backed ones don't go cheap
 
I agree, very overweight but that is fixable but he does seem build downhill and that will not change with work and is a conformation thing. I personally don't like that but doesn't mean it can't be a very nice pony!
 
Yes hes lovely & sounds like he has the potential to be a cracking wee pony. Keep us posted if you go for it & keep me in mind when you come to selling him on I would love him in my field!
 
If he is still growing he might just be temporarily bum high. The weight will come off when he is in work. Go for it, he looks really nice. :) and get in quick before someone else does!

I saw him yesterday and was very tempted. Would be a nice summer project and all being well, easy to sell.
 
He's pretty cheap IMO. In the past (when the market was good) I would pay £500 for a project pony and that was always for an unbacked pony off a hillside normally (ie. very little had been done with them), so if this has already had the basics done £650 is pretty good. IMO, natives always sell especially anything around the 14.2hh-ish bracket as adults are often interested as well as kids. If you get it out and about, should easily be worth £1,500 for 2 / 3 months work. I used to sell mine for £2,500 once they had been out to a few events under-saddle. If you try to introduce him to a bit of everything (ie. dressage, SJ, XC, hacking etc.) then you can sell him as a proper allrounder which everybody wants.

muckypony - why is it a "poor pony"? Looks to be in too good a nic to me!
 
Very nice pony and typical of the breed! £650ono is a very reasonable asking price and you will double your money if you produce him nicely. I'd bite their hand off for him before these guys do :p
 
I definitely would! My old RI and I bought a 7yr old NF a few years ago from an auction. Paid barely more than 300, spent 7 or so weeks playing with him, hacking, jumping and neatening him up, then sold him for 1600. Best temperament ever! And a fab jumper.

Have recently just bought a new horse, a 6yr old NF. Just like the other, very willing attitude, not spooky or silly, and pretty much great at everything. I reckon they're easy ponies to polish up, and at his size/age, you'll definitely have people wanting him once he's done a bit more! I definitely would!! (and you can join me in the 'we have fat NFs club...')

Love duns and specials with eh near hind being white like my first mare and my little dun welshie A . Cute pony I would go for him and do something with him but then I would not let him go lol

Loads of reasons why people don't do the work themselves. If you are a good rider you will easily improve a sensible type beyond recognition in a matter of months. I'm sure the cob I bought in December would sell for double her price and it's because I've had her out and about putting in consistent work with her. If you know the pony is too small, the wrong type, you don't have time, etc then sometimes it's better to cut your losses. I've got a Welsh A that I should do that with because I can't ride her and she's too much for my daughter. She's young however so I will wait another year and see if my daughter can manage her then we will sell her.
 
My only reservation is how fat he might be when you go and see him, it could take 2/3 months to get the weight off to start doing anything sensible. If you aren't in a massive rush (ie the world doesn't end if you had to keep him 6/8 months) then certainly worth a look - maybe get some photos of his hooves to your farrier just to check he isn't already a lami problem.
