Thoughts on this situation please...

So YO now has the weight of the new Animal Welfare Act in his favour. If I was him I would be telling these people they either treat the horse as a horse or leave.

In the end he is responsible for this animals health and wellbeing as much as the owners are.

True, we will have a chat with him later, I think he's on the verge of asking them to leave anyway now.

I had a quick chat with owner today actually and it turns out that the horse is vicous around other mares when turned out with them. So I am actually quite glad its not going out and if this is the case it should be at a yard that offers individual turnout.
This is why it has not been turned ou with the herd of mares.
It has been out in a small paddock for the last part of its recovery and was fine in there but now it can go out with the others it is just left in the stable.

Aha, the missing vital link in the story. The situation now takes on a whole new meaning.

There are clearly underlying reasons here. Box rest per se is sometimes unavoidable - most horses can adapt to it if needed, and it's usually a limited period. This one sounds as if it's getting a really raw deal. Don't you think this huge amount of food is part of the problem? Obviously don't know what's being fed, but this poor thing, now well, could be jumping out of its skin. It wouldn't help its 'dangerous' behaviour either. It needs seriously taking in hand - small paddock turnout, proper feeding, as much socialisation as anyone will risk, etc. If the owners can't be convinced, then the YO should be. The horse is basically in solitary confinement - it's probably going funny in the head, if it hasn't already.
