My mum is a pure-bred cocker and my dad (who the hoomans know is definately my dad) is thought to be (by his hoomans) a just a cocker x springer. Obviously I've inherited my good looks from my grandad or sumfink as I don't have long hair and long ears like my mum and dad. My mum and dad are both working dogs and I like to sniff out trails too. What other cross breed do you think I have? Sorry about the photos, my hooman says I am a bit of a worm and never keep still. I don't know what that means but it sounds fun!

He is a cute puppy, but I can't see any spanner in there, it looks like a large dose of tyre biter to me. (ake collie)

I think he may have Border Collie in there too. Is his dad definately his dad? A litter can be sired by 2 of more dogs, so even if they mated the mum to 1 dog more could have got to her. Smooth coat is a dominant gene, so 1 of his parents would have to have been a smooth coat for him to be smooth coated and he does look smooth coated in the pics, in BC's their coat doesn't grow until they are 5-6 months old, but you can usually tell if they are going to be smooth or rough coated before that.

Dad is certainly not a cocker x springer if Mum is a cocker.

How are they sure that that mutt sired the litter rather than a fence jumping border collie?

He is adorable. And a mischief. In equal measures. Mum was a gorgeous cocker (so friendly and very good looking) and his sister had got cocker genes as if you didn't know otherwise you'd think she was pure cocker. But there was something about him that just caught our eye...

Puppy is smooth coated and the dog that was mated to his mum is a working springer x cocker. But the dad is not a "pure" springer x cocker (ie not breed from pure cocker and pure springer) so he possibly has other genes.

I'm not up enough on breeding to know if it's possible for dad to still be the dad (rather than a random fence jumping dog!) and just some recessive part of dad to show up in pup that doesn't show up in dad (such as lab, collie etc...)

Hopefully that makes sense as I'm posting via a mobile app which doesn't let me see my whole post (just the last sentence).

Total heaven... worm wriggler, tyre bitter, mischief maker and ankle chewer... but, I can't for the life of me see any springer in him.... looks mostly Border Collie to me, but with lab ears!

At the end of the day who cares, he is scrumpsious!!

The short coat of a smooth border collies should be dominant to that of a spaniel so two long coated parents won't produce a shorthaired pup.

I vote for a fence jumper unless dad is shorter haired?

Why was the mating allowed?

'dad' is long haired as is mum and so is sister...

Breeding was between the breeder's two working spaniels as he is a gamekeeper. Keep some rehome the rest.

Not heard of the possibility of 2 dads before as puppy and his sister were so far apart in looks it seems that's an option if that can really happen with sister taking after 'dad' and ours taking after the fence jumping short haired dog of some variety.

As someone posted it's no odds as we chose him on personality and looks etc etc as a pet - we weren't looking for a particular breed.

Just intrigued and wanted some input from more knowledgable people than me!!

It becomes important if he ever needs treating for mange - you can't give collies or collie crosses ivermectin.

A litter can have multiple sires and in fact it is sometimes done deliberately (with the puppies being DNA tested) where perhaps it is last chance for the bitch or maybe two older sires.

How old is he? He looks to have quite good bone, so possibly lab in the mix, or as said smooth border collie. It could well be a case of double conception, it certainly can happen, a bitch that came to our GSD stud dog had a mixed litter, some definitely pure GSD the others just like the collie she had a secret assignation with.:p

Hi just posted this pic on thread I just made but my friends got a springer spaniel cross collie and she looks so similar! She's 9 weeks... Not a great pic I know sorry!!

sorry she just wouldn't stay still!!! Your pup is beautiful!

Thanks all. He's 14wks old now and a bundle of energy, but he sleeps well too which is good!!!

I keep wondering if the collie look is just his colouring that deceives the eye as it makes him look collie regardless of features.

A few people have said possible lab x due to build/ears etc who have met him. But others have said his bum and build etc look spaniel and it's just the coat and ears that are wrong.

It's so funny when we meet people who ask what breed he is as it then involves a long discussion about breeds - which he loves as long as the person is making a fuss of him at the same time.

That last one looks a lot like him from what I can see!

I would also say it looks like a Border Collie influence.

If you really want to know then check out this website or google for alternatives:

Curiosity would definitley get the better of me in your situation!! Also as someone says Border Collies can't have ivermectin and I believe Advocate has a warning to not use on Border Collies as well so it could be important to find out.
