thoughts on windsuckers

I had a very mild windsucker, who I have to admit had an awful lot of mild colics.

I probably wouldn't buy another tbh, as there are so many horses without!

I think it has been proven that stereotypies don't actually "spread" within a yard now though!

I had a mare who cribbed and wind sucked, it really did not bother me although tried all sorts to make her stop with no luck. I when I went to college, I took a lot of flack from ym and other owners on DIY side as they were moaning there horses would copy my mare :( in the end the ym made me put the complete grill up. But she still found something in the stable to latch on :D
Even though I had to put up with all the crap over her I would not hesitate in getting another if it was the right horse

I look after one - it has never caused her any problems.
She is 22 this year and apart from wearing her top front teeth down to stumps she has suffered no ill affects.
My friend bought her as a 15yr old, she has already cribbed for 10yrs so we didn't go down the collar route.
I find them unfair for a seasoned cribber as they are addicted to the 'high' they get from it - to put a collar on this mare after so long would just make her miserable.

So no, i wouldn't be put off by a windsucker providing it has had no history of side effects & would buy one :)

My ex has an arab who cribs. We used to use a collar at feed times, but don't bother now. His cribbing has lessened since we got rid of his ulcers. He lives out now, and still cribs a bit, but has never had colic, and it doesn't affect him. It wouldn't bother me.
