I have a young horse in at the moment for restarting - he was backed last year and had some problems, and he has been sent to me because the owner knows I will do him in strict accordance with the vet's instructions etc etc

I am charging my usual (far too reasonable

) fixed weekly rate for this service.

However, the horse has been yarded over winter with other youngsters, and when he came in he was covered in thick, dried on sh*t and muck - the worst I have ever seen. The owner was very apologetic (and rather embarrassed

as well she might be) and said she would pay extra for me to clean him up.

It has taken me a total of 6 hours (spread over 5 days) to get it all off him. At first I concentrated on his girth area and between his front legs, because I couldn't get any work into him without sorting that bit out (couldn't put a roller or girth on him). Doing his tummy and back legs and bottom involved taking my life in my hands

- he was very very good considering his age and what I was having to do to him, but inevitably I p*ssed him off rather

So now I have to decide what to charge the owner - whatever it is will include an added bill for new nails as I have none left, and my hands look like brown crocodile skin

Suggestions appreciated
