Thoughts? - to re-school?

i'll will try to make this short n sweet

if you had a quiet, nice horse which you felt was wasted, wasted meaning; you can happpily potter round the school on this horse, but not really feeling like progression

However the goal is to do BD or BS(ja) in a year or two ideally! Horse in question is 4 and so quiet, safe and sensible...! (and never for sale/loan). Lessons begin in Jan, but if you still felt the same way would you; get a rider for said horse?/part loan or just muddle through and work together (with lessons)?

Ideally i want to work together and progress with the horse but the other part is telling me to ask a (very good) rider i know to school her on for a few weeks and then i have weekly/twice weekly lessons... and progress quicker??




p.s keep this lighthearted please... this is not set in stone and i may regret thinking outloud tomorow when i re-read this lol

I am not too sure I understand this right. You have a 4 year that you feel is wasted? Why do you feel that? At that age hacking (which I assume you do a lot of?) and a bit of pottering round the school is ideal, you don't necessarily need to be doing a lot more. Try to work him forward and stretching long and low if possible and that should be quite enough for his age. Come spring if you want to push on a bit you could start lessons or consider sending the horse to your trainer for a couple of weeks intensive training, but at 4, unless you are in a hurry there is no need to rush.

Firstly - there is no such thing as wasted time with horses!
Secondly - your horse has no concept of being 'wasted', provided your horse is happy and well cared for I don't see a problem.

Personally I prefer to do it more slowly myself, I've spent a long time working on my rather sharp (which is an improvement in explosive!) TB, I'm sure I could have got there quicker if someone else had helped but I know him inside out now and we have built up lots of trust.
I also have a 2yo waiting in the wings and again I will do everything myself, then any problems that occur can only be my doing, I will know at the end that good or bad, (although hopefully not!) I am responsible for what she becomes and I won't have the task of fixing problems that someone else has caused - cynical I know but I've spent far too much time trying to help horses with man made issues.

i just feel she would progress quicker and perhaps better? with someone else schooling her up for me.... hence why i think shes "wasted".... she has a good life and is never going anywhere but i just want to see her going places comp wise

she trust me and me her - but we argue - a lot - when ridden - on the ground we are best mates lol


was thinking out loud but thanks for the opinions
