Psephologist - enjoy. I didn't start riding until I was 26 and didn't get my own horse until a few years later. I'm also from a non-horsey background and don't see it as a problem.
I started at 40, and like a lot of men, used to be afraid of horses! I DO NOT ACCEPT ATTITUDE when out riding...I do have a few friends who pass people on foot, when riding their horses, like they wern't even there! I always wish people a good morning and often stop and talk with them...
Just because someone puts their 'arse' on the back of a horse doesn't mean SQUAT to me...socially speaking...rr
I worried a lot before I got my first one - would I do something stupid and make him ill? Would he hate me? Would he bankrupt me? And lots more.
But I needn't have worried, it was happy happy happy all the way!
I hope you like the horse.
HOW EXCITING!! I was 30 when I finally got my own horse. I too came from a non-horsey family and did the paper round to afford a lesson once a fortnight!
I have had a horse now for 10 years and I still sometimes just sit in the field and stare at him and think how lucky I am. I often tell him too how lucky I am when we're out on a hack - much to the amusement of passers by!
Good luck with your loan horse - it is daunting but you will be fine!
